First GeoServer Cloud Code Sprint

At Camptocamp, we drive the development of Open Source geospatial solutions, and GeoServer Cloud is a key example. Already a scalable and reliable solution for production use, we took it further during the first GeoServer Cloud Community Code Sprint, held from September 26 to October 2, 2024, at our Chambéry office in France.

This sprint brought together contributors from various countries and organizations, all focused on pushing the boundaries of the GeoServer Cloud project.

The event offered a unique chance to work directly with core developers, address complex technical challenges, and strengthen the architecture of GeoServer Cloud. As a cutting-edge solution, it breaks down geospatial services like WMS, WFS, and REST API into independently scalable components, making it ideal for modern DevOps environments.

Key improvements achieved during the sprint include:

• Comprehensive acceptance tests, reinforcing system stability and performance.
• An upgrade to GeoServer 2.26.0, leveraging the latest features and improvements.
• Progress toward deploying multi-platform images, boosting flexibility in different operational contexts.
• Auto-scaling functionality integrated with Helm charts to increase service scalability.
• Enhanced GeoWebCache management for more efficient handling of cached layers in cloud environments.
• Development of a new base image with GDAL (including Java bindings) for more streamlined deployments.
• These advancements are more than incremental—they solidify GeoServer Cloud’s position as the go-to solution for scalable, cloud-native geospatial services, capable of handling demanding production environments with ease.

This sprint wasn’t just about code—it was about strengthening the GeoServer Cloud community and pushing the project forward. With every contributor fully engaged, the results speak for themselves.
