First Formal Lecture

Educational systems specifically universities provide product to the nation in terms of work force. A University students are considered building blocks for the development and prosperity of nation. Every year hundreds of students get enrolled in universities, and some new people join them as teachers. It is a new experience for both students and teacher to begin a new chapter in their lives.

New students and teachers come up with specific schema about the university, teachers and the system. They think university life is full of fun as they watch on our social media-whether they work hard or not, they would pass the semester. They think that on very first day teacher would not deliver lecture, he/she will have some chit chat with students in the name of introductory class. This is the image which is sketched on the blank mind of the new university students.

I had an experience to take the class as a lecturer, I found it somehow wastage of time to line up students and ask them their names and backgrounds when I knew I would not remember their names. I noted a new strategy, luckily I was assigned minor courses in different departments, I gave students assignments on very first day; to prepare a presentation on why they are supposed to study a particular subject different from their major subject. This practice was somewhat out of the world not only for the students but for many of colleagues as well. They were of the point that If I would not teach them than what presentation I would take. With apology, I was convinced enough, I learned my international educational exposure to make students think and question each topic they study instead of spoon feeding them, this approach would not only help to enhance critical thinking but also improve rational approach of the students.

Another interesting thing which I explored as visiting faculty is “ hum to yehi krte hai” “ This what our department do. This approach made me confuse, if someone is not ready to adopt the beauty and essence of another discipline openly than this is mere a formality to ask a teacher to teach that subject.

The purpose of this article is not to criticize our educational system, as a student of educational leadership and management I am analyzing the system .
