To address this, we offer a pay-per-kilowatt-hour (kWh) model, allowing customers to pay only for the electricity they consume, with no upfront costs. This innovative approach makes it easier for individuals and businesses in rural communities to transition to renewable energy, reducing their reliance on costly and polluting fossil fuels.
Enabling Financial Inclusion through Smart Meters First Electric’s smart meters play a crucial role in our mission to enhance financial inclusion. These meters are integrated with a sophisticated meter management and billing platform that enables seamless, cashless transactions. Each smart meter is assigned a Dedicated Virtual Account (DVA), provided by our financial partners, such as Paystack and PayGo Dash . Customers can top up their meters by making payments directly to their DVAs. The payment is automatically converted into electricity units, which are credited to the corresponding smart meter over the air for IoT-enabled meters or sent as a recharge token via SMS or WhatsApp for offline meters.
This system eliminates the need for cash transactions, which are often cumbersome and risky in rural areas. By integrating digital payments, we are not only making energy access more convenient but also introducing rural communities to formal financial services. This digital inclusion is a significant step towards broader financial inclusion, as it helps individuals build a financial history, which can be leveraged for other financial services in the future.

Driving Economic Empowerment through Credit Offerings Beyond providing energy access, First Electric is also leveraging its platform to offer credit for appliance purchases. Many rural households and small businesses lack access to essential appliances like refrigerators and freezers, which are crucial for improving their quality of life and economic productivity. Through our platform, customers can purchase these appliances on credit, with repayments made through their electricity top-ups over time.
