Brenda Kokwaro is an industry expert for the healthcare industry at the German Business Delegation for East Africa. In Nairobi she identifies business opportunities for German companies. In a recently published article in the Africa Business Guide, she evaluates the market potential of the Kenyan health sector as follows: “Due to rapid population growth in general, public investments in the health sector are increasing and the private health sector is also developing very dynamically, especially due to a growing middle class. Particularly interesting opportunities arise in the treatment of chronic diseases, paediatrics, dentistry, orthopaedics, cosmetic surgery, ophthalmology and diagnostics. For example, Kenya's hospitals and healthcare facilities want to make greater use of state-of-the-art equipment and technologies that meet international standards. The latest medical devices, instruments and scanning technologies are therefore particularly in high demand.”
In this context, FEH Medizintechnik GmbH, a medium-sized German medical technology company based in Rheine, conducted the first DTRAX?? workshop in Nairobi with Kenyan orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons. DTRAX?? is a minimally invasive cervical spine system for the treatment of patients with cervical nerve root compression. The successful workshop was led by Mubashir Mahmood Qureshi, Chairman of the Neurological Society of Kenya, Dr Richard Ombachi, Consultant Orthopedic Spine Surgeon University of Nairobi and Chairman of the Spine Surgeons of Kenya Association and Marc Diamantidis, responsible EMEA Sales Manager of FEH Medizintechnik GmbH.

During the workshop the participants learned how to use the DTRAX?? technique on sawbones. Further training projects like cadlabs will follow in September 2023. At the same time, the registration process for the DTRAX?? procedure will take place. The first surgeries are to take place in Kenyan hospitals, such as the Aga Khan University Hospital or the Nairobi Hospital in cooperation with German neurosurgeons by January 2024 at the latest.
Mahmood Qureshi: “The workshop was the perfect opportunity to learn about this innovative technology. Many thanks to FEH Medizintechnik GmbH. We look forward to being able to use the DTRAX?? system in Kenya.”
