First, Do No Harm

The Business of Coaching with Horses ~ Reach More Clients, Feed Your Horses and Change the World!
We have the power to help others work through some pretty tough stuff in their personal or professional lives. And it starts with the enrollment process. (Did I just hear a groan…?) I know this can bring up a lot of anxiety for some people, but when you shift from creating a space of discovery instead of a mindset of ‘selling’ you’ll actually become excited about having more enrollment conversations!
Discovery requires collaboration and inquiry. Selling feels like getting what you want regardless of what is in the client’s best interest. If you want people to follow you and hire you, become a great leader by listening and responding.?
For me, a simple philosophy to consider is, “First, do no harm.”
It is often said that the exact phrase "First do no harm" (Latin: Primum non nocere) is a part of the original Hippocratic oath.?
Although the majority of us equine-inspired practitioners are not medical doctors, the tenant of “First, do no harm” is a foundational principle for how to hold our work sacred, care for our clients, and even conduct our business and marketing!
So many ‘soulful-service’ providers cringe at the prospect of marketing. They just can’t shake the image of a seedy, slimy stereotype of a smarmy used car salesman who wants to grab your money in exchange for a clunker car. This is an outdated consciousness that ‘to sell’ our service is ‘dirty’ or unholy in some way.
I’m going to assume that you are already ethical in your approach to your practice with respect to offering your service according to your abilities and training and that you are not offering anything you are not qualified or capable of delivering. Therefore, ‘Do No Harm’ tenet clearly applies to your service.
So, here’s what I invite you to ‘lick and chew’ on today… approach EVERYTHING you do from the mindset of ‘Do No Harm’. Start with YOURSELF!
It’s critical that we take care of ourselves in order to be fully present in all of our relationships, including with our horses.
As you create, prepare, and invite others into your sacred space of possibility, take some time to reflect on how you are treating yourself.?
With respect to inviting others to work with you (MARKETING)…
** Do you understand the full value of the benefits you provide your clients?
** Can you embrace the fact that by not sharing your service that you are actually denying others the possibility of help or even transformation?!
** Can you hold the space for them to decide for themselves whether or not they can afford your service? (deciding for them is crossing their sovereign boundary).
** Can you listen to their authentic needs and honestly demonstrate how you will help them?
** Do you have other resources available to offer if you recognize you are not the best service provider for them?
A simple discovery conversation (I call them Clarity Sessions) can help someone make an empowered decision for themselves while also build trust in your relationship to work together. If that person is not a good fit to work with you at this time, providing other resources to help them on their journey creates good reciprocal energy that will continue to flow through your business.?
Go forth and enroll my friends!!
