FIRST DIGITAL HYBRID HEPATITIS-B VACCINATION PILOT
The Federal Medical Centre, Abuja, Nigeria, in collaboration with the Red Cross Abuja Chapter and Convexity Technologies, conducted the First Hybrid Hepatitis-B Vaccination Pilot using the Convexity Humanitarian Aid Transfer Solution - CHATS platform.
This pilot tested an "item-based" campaign on CHATS, offering Hepatitis B vaccinations. The CHATS.CASH digital solution facilitated a seamless vaccination campaign for adults and children in the Durunmi IDP camp, in Abuja Nigeria.?
Hepatitis B is a severe liver infection in the world, it is caused by the hepatitis B virus, which attacks and injures the liver. Two billion people, or one in three people, have been infected, and about 300 million people are living with a chronic hepatitis B infection. Unfortunately, each year up to 1 million people die from hepatitis B even though it is preventable and treatable.
The most vulnerable people who succumb to diverse viruses and illnesses are the internally displaced persons; in Nigeria, it is estimated that over two million people are displaced and as such, are susceptible to various illnesses and avoidable death. It is equally disheartening that people who fled from the horrors of war and insecurity should then succumb to needless and avoidable death.
How was CHATS.CASH used?
The Convexity Humanitarian Aid Transfer Solution - CHATS was used to pilot the ‘item-based’ campaign on the CHATS platform, where Hepatitis-B vaccines were given. The platform utilizes a tri-modal identification system which includes liveness check, pictures, and national identification, which can be created for persons who are yet to be captured on the national database. The onboarding process includes collecting beneficiary biodata and other relevant information. The beneficiaries were then given cards from the Federal Medical Centre where the results of their tests were imputed and then they were tested and those found negative were vaccinated. The records of those who tested positive were collated and transmitted to the Federal Medical Centre for further treatment.
The NGO dashboard was used for setting up the campaign and identifying the number of vaccines that were disbursed. The Red Cross volunteers and staff of Fedral Medical Centre utilized the field agent application to capture the data of the beneficiaries.
The chats.cash ecosystem was crucial for a seamless vaccination campaign for adults and children at the Durumi internally displaced person-IDP camp. The campaign setup, beneficiary management, and real-time data tracking exhibited the efficiency of the project. This pilot demonstrates the potential of combining traditional methods with innovative technologies like blockchain for secure data management and efficient resource allocation in healthcare delivery.
The Future of Healthcare: Blockchain's Potential
This pilot project is a glimpse into the future potential of healthcare, where blockchain technology can revolutionize various aspects.? Blockchain's secure and transparent ledger system can ensure improved data security where patient’s medical records are collected with their consent and are stored securely, reducing the risk of data breaches. Access to the medical database is equally restricted to ensure access to only those authorized to do the same, eliminating the supply chain problem of tracking and ensuring that the vaccine and medication reach identified and verifiable patients, and facilitating efficient data sharing to accelerate medical research and development.
The power of blockchain can be harnessed to ensure a more secure, efficient, and equitable healthcare system for everyone.?
