The First Database IPO in Over 20 Years

What an amazing day.

A few minutes ago, MongoDB officially became a public company. Few companies ever reach this milestone, and I am so incredibly proud of the many contributions by our employees, customers, users, partners, and investors who helped us get to this point.

Ten years ago our founders – Eliot Horowitz, Dwight Merriman and Kevin Ryan – had the foresight and conviction to launch a database company right here in New York City. This defied all conventional wisdom, and clearly illustrated that nothing is impossible if you combine thinking big with unique talent and insight, and the tenacity to build a world-class company brick by brick.

To put this day in perspective, MongoDB is the first database company to IPO in over 20 years.

MongoDB was founded by developers for developers to provide a database designed for today’s modern applications. Over the last ten years, MongoDB has grown from a bold idea into a company serving over 4,300 customers of all shapes and sizes, including over half of the global Fortune 100. Some of the most sophisticated and demanding customers rely on MongoDB to power mission-critical applications that run their businesses.

I am incredibly proud of the MongoDB team and how far we’ve come together. We’re not only the first database company to go public after a very long time, we are also the first deep technology company in New York City to IPO. I am grateful to our customers and partners, who helped drive our growth and make our technology better. I am grateful to our investors, who believed in us. I’m grateful to our employees, who worked tirelessly to get us to this point, and to their loved ones, for supporting them along the way.

This is clearly an exciting moment, and we will take some time to appreciate how far we’ve come together. While there’s no question that an IPO is an exciting milestone, it’s easy to over-index on this one event. This is a mistake. Great companies are built with a long-term orientation, and MongoDB is no different.

Tomorrow it’s back to business as usual for us. We continue to be focused, now more than ever, on building a great business – developing great products, solving important problems for our customers, and ensuring that MongoDB can continue to attract the best people in our industry – to enable customers to unleash the power of software and data to transform their businesses.

We’ve made amazing progress over the past ten years. Here’s to the next ten years.
