Is this the first custom 3DP OC implant?
My patient, Simone, had severe pain and a wry neck. We discovered a lytic tumour in her C1 lateral mass with collapse and fracturing. We needed to fix her head to her neck to save her life!
We asked Simone to find a comfortable position so that she could look ahead and we obtained a lateral X-ray. The clever Anatomics BioModelling engineers used the X-ray and a CT scan to plan the manufacture of a 3DP titanium occipito cervical implant and drill guide so that we could ensure Simone's head was in the best alignment. The screw trajectories were carefully designed to obtain maximal fixation without damaging the brain, spinal cord, nerves and vertebral arteries.
Firstly I resected the tumour and then we used the 3DP drill guide and popped in the 3DP custom implant. Each of the screws had been pre measured so we secured the 3DP implant with 6 screws into the lateral masses of C2-4 and 6 screws into the occipital bone.
We didn't need any expensive navigation or fancy equipment, just standard fluoroscopy. The implant fitted perfectly and every screw went in as planned.
