First CDR at Mammoth, certified CDR at Orca

Mammoth is officially up and running and produced its first removals! The plant is about ten times bigger than Orca and brings additional high-quality carbon removal capacity to the market. The inauguration of Mammoth on May 8 marked a milestone in our company history that we were proud to celebrate with our customers, partners, and the Climeworkers who made it all happen.?

Mammoth: the world’s largest direct air capture plant?

Mammoth is designed for a nameplate capture capacity of up to 36,000 tons of CO? per year. Twelve collector containers out of 72 are already installed and the remaining ones will be added throughout 2024. Just like Orca, the plant is powered by renewable energy, provided by Orka náttúrunnar / ON Power , and our CO? is mineralized underground by Carbfix .

Jan Wurzbacher , co-founder and co-CEO of Climeworks said: “Starting operations of our Mammoth plant is another proof point in Climeworks’ scale-up journey to megaton capacity by 2030 and gigaton by 2050. It is exemplary of our continuous R&D investments to further optimize our technology and gain maturity through on-the-ground experience. Constructing multiple real-world plants in rapid sequence makes Climeworks the most deployed carbon removal company with direct air capture at the core.”?

All about Mammoth ?

Climeworks is certified under the Puro Standard?

Just shortly after bringing Mammoth to life, we were excited to announce that our carbon removal services at Orca achieved certification under the Puro Standard – a first in the direct air capture industry. The Puro Standard is the first comprehensive standard for engineered removal methods in the voluntary carbon market. The certification validates that we produced net removals that fulfill a stringent set of quality criteria, such as additionality and high durability.

The certified removals are issued in the public Puro Registry , where their complete lifecycle is recorded from issuance to retirement. It ensures traceability and transparency, avoids double counting and, most importantly, fosters trust in the voluntary carbon market. Carbon catch-up: Navigating decarbonization in aviation with carbon removal solutions?

Swiss International Air Lines and Lufthansa Group recently signed long-term carbon removal agreements with Climeworks. As the aviation industry is transitioning towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 to support the goals of the Paris Agreement, reaching this target will require a multifaceted approach. High-quality carbon removal, used in addition to deep and rapid in-sector emission reductions, will play a crucial role in compensating for unavoidable and historical emissions.?

Join us for an insightful webinar to discuss the role of carbon removal in the aviation decarbonization journey with Melanie Heiniger from SWISS, Hemant Mistry from International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Cyril Brunner from 瑞士苏黎世联邦理工学院 (Federal Institute of Technology Zurich).?The webinar will be moderated by Laurent Müller ,?Climeworks’?Director of Strategic Partnerships Management.?
