?FUNDING POINT – FIRST, BUILD A CROWD

As I am designing a new crowdfunding campaign, I always like to pause and ask if there is a better way to explain to a client what successful crowdfunding is all about.

?I decided that this time, the first step was to advise building the crowd. Bill Huston, who has worked many investment crowdfunding campaigns, agrees with me that without a ‘crowd’ there can be no ‘funding’.

Setting aside the misperception that all one has to do is post their offering on a crowdfunding site, building a crowd is a difficult challenge. It takes time to build a large number of relationships to a level where the risk of investing is overwhelmed by a motivation to invest. Simple friends and followers on social media posts will most often fail to have that relationship that will support a fundraising campaign – whether charitable or for-profit.

?I recently revised my three keys of raising funding to make the first key of ‘trust’ – a belief by the investor candidate that a small business will make an effort to be successful and has the capability to do so.

?Starting a new relationship and elevating it to one of trust is hard. Starting hundreds and possibly thousands of relationships may be impossible. Doing it in a hurry is exactly that.

?Sidestepping the do-it-yourself (DIY) syndrome of an entrepreneur, a small business must work through existing relationships to get to the number needed to reach a campaign goal. A small business and its leadership need to be introduced with enough splash to be considered an endorsement and testimonial to trust. This may be accomplished through:

·?????? The organization’s leadership team (each member reaching out to their network

·?????? The organization’s employees

·?????? The organization’s contractors and service providers

·?????? The leadership of organizations of whom the small business or its leadership are members:

o?? Industry organizations

o?? Business organizations

o?? Civic and community organizations

o?? Religious organizations

It may also be accomplished through:

·?????? Influencers (podcasters, show hosts)

·?????? News media, journals, and other publications

·?????? Certifications by organizations, laboratories, and experts

In addition, the small business and its leaders may engage in quality self-promotion (this is not blindly emailing a list), which may take the form of:

·?????? Publishing a book

·?????? Instructing a webinar

·?????? Producing one’s own media and shows

?Building a crowd is an intentional viral campaign to create awareness, generate interest, develop trust, and communicate an offer that matches the needs and wants of the target audience.

?Every reason for investing by any investor candidate should be considered in both the message and the crafting of the offer.

?All in all, it is a lot of work that must be approached strategically within the boundaries of available resources.

?RCI COMMUNITY FUNDS

As a member of this new company, I am working with a team of professionals to craft a new funding mechanism for revitalizing underserved communities.

Approval was given by the State of Maryland for the formation of @RCI Community Funds Benefit LLC – this for-profit business is working to raise and deploy funding strategically into a series of selected communities.

In parallel, the newly formed RCI Academy Corporation will offer educational programs on community revitalization.

RCI Community Funds presents the Community Revitalization show on Thursdays at 10 am Eastern Time on LinkedIn, YouTube, and Facebook.

LAST THURSDAY, the Community Revitalization show featured the new nonprofit – RCI

?Academy and its first educational program on Community Capital. Andrea Miller, Executive Director of the Center for Common Ground, discussed with Karl Dakin the importance of understanding community capital as a concept in organizing collaboration toward improving underserved communities.

?THIS MORNING, I was the guest on the Don Cohen show on October 28, 9 am MDT, 11 EDT, on LinkedIn Live.
