First Bite: Summer 2023 Noteworthy News You Can Use

The world of scholarly publishing can be exciting and inspiring but also overwhelming for the new publishing professional or student. Between all the industry jargon, the complex landscape of people, organizations, and policies to keep up with, and more resources and events out there than you could ever hope to get to, it’s hard to know what’s important to follow or where to begin. That’s where The Early Career Chew comes in! ?

To help early career professionals understand the important topics and navigate the industry, four leading professional organizations - Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP), Council of Science Editors (CSE), International Society for Managing and Technical Editors (ISMTE), and STM Association (STM) - have come together to launch this free, virtual newsletter summarizing the top industry news, career resources, and events each quarter. Our Summer 2023 inaugural issue covers topics such as AI in scholarly publishing, conferences and events to get involved in, and resources like SSP’s Career Development Podcast and a Special Issue on Careers in Scientific Editing and Publishing in CSE’s Science Editor. ?

SSP’s Professional Skills Map?

The SSP Professional Skills Map presents the most frequently reported personal characteristics and interpersonal and technical skills that are (a) essential to success and (b) emerging needs for development. It can be used to explore positions within scholarly publishing and the important skills identified for those positions through surveys of the community. The Professional Skills Map is updated annually through a survey sent to scholarly publishing professionals. Look for a link to this survey in a future issue of The Early Career Chew! Science Editor Special Issue (March 2023): Careers in Scientific Editing and Publishing?

The focus of this issue of Science Editor is on careers and roles in scientific editing and publishing. In 2017, CSE published a similar special careers-focused issue, and it seemed a good time to explore what has shifted in the past 6 years. This issue includes interviews and articles covering an array of editor roles and positions, many of which are new, have increased in prominence, or significantly changed in the last few years. There are also articles on the importance of training and preparing the next generation of researchers and editors, increasing diversity and equity, and the transition to remote work.?Access the special issue here. ?
