'First of all...': EAM Jaishankar corrects Joe Biden after he calls India 'xenophobic'

External Affairs Minister (EAM) Jaishankar recently addressed United States President Joe Biden's comments regarding India's approach to immigration, highlighting the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) as a reflection of India's open society. In a bid to correct Biden's "xenophobia" remark, Jaishankar emphasized India's historical openness to diverse cultures and communities.

During an ET Roundtable discussion, Jaishankar expressed, “India has been a very unique country in the history of the world, with a society that has always been open to people from different backgrounds." He further stated, “Our economy is not faltering; in fact, India's openness to immigrants is a testament to our strength and inclusivity."

Biden's statement, made during a Washington fundraising event, attributed America's economic growth to its acceptance of immigrants, contrasting it with countries like China, Japan, Russia, and India, which he labeled as "xenophobic." He remarked, “Immigrants are what makes us strong," highlighting the importance of embracing diversity.

The term "xenophobia," as defined by Merriam-Webster, refers to fear or hatred of strangers or anything foreign. Biden's characterization of India drew criticism from various quarters, including Tokyo, which rejected the characterization as "unfortunate" and lacking an accurate understanding of Japan's policies.

Jaishankar, in his response, pointed to the CAA as a mechanism to extend support to individuals facing challenges in their home countries, emphasizing India's willingness to welcome those in need. “That's why we have the CAA, which is to open up doors for people who are in trouble," Jaishankar noted.

India's stance on immigration has been one of inclusivity and hospitality, with a long history of embracing diversity. Jaishankar's remarks underscored India's commitment to maintaining an open society, welcoming individuals from all walks of life.

As discussions continue regarding immigration policies and their impact on economic growth and societal harmony, India's approach stands as a testament to the strength found in diversity and inclusivity. The ongoing dialogue reflects a global recognition of the importance of fostering open and welcoming societies for a brighter future.
