Steven a 12yr old boy while playing with his siblings at home on a Saturday afternoon suddenly became still, fell on the ground convulsing. His mum was called immediately, and the following ensued:
-Get a metal spoon!
-Bring salt!
-Water, Water, bring the water!!!
On arrival at the emergency center, Steven ended up with a torn lower lip and a broken tooth, his mum had a bleeding finger which she had put in his mouth to stop his teeth from clenching together while waiting for the arrival of the spoon! What brought tears to my eyes was the quantity of salt his mum said she had poured in his mouth!!
All these to revive a convulsing child??
Correct way to handle seizures:
1) Protect from harm
2) Place something soft under his/her head
3) Loosen tight clothing
4) Roll into the RECOVERY POSITION when jerking stops. (visit our post on the 12th of April for the recovery position)
5) Reassure until full recovery
DO NOT:?
1) Put anything in their mouth, including fingers
2) Restrain the casualty
