We have recently purchased a camper.?It is exciting and more my style than doing tent camping.?Either way, there is plenty of preparation in planning a camping adventure.?I am grateful that I have a husband that is much more knowledgeable about camping than I am.?
When I was growing up, we took one trip to go camping in the Great Smokey Mountains, which was within a 4-hour drive from our home.?We pulled a small camper behind our station wagon.?My parents stayed in the motel, and we three children, (teenage years) were in the camper in the parking lot of the motel.
Thus, my best idea of camping was, “Let’s stay at the Holiday Inn!”
As a retired RN, I know you do need to be as best prepared as possible for the camping adventure.?For me, that means having as many of the comforts of home as is reasonable.
Having a well prepared first aid kit is crucial.?Depending on the type of camping and outdoor activities you are planning, your list may be longer.?For those who are planning on doing lengthy hikes, in rough terrain, you may need a few more items.
Here is a list of basic things for your First Aid Kit:
bandages of various sizes
gauze pads or gauze roll
adhesive tape
antiseptic cream/ointment/cleanser
soap
alcohol or sterile solutions
cotton swabs and pads
pain and anti-inflammatory medicine
sunscreen

sunburn relief spray
anti-diarrhea medicine
ice packs
heat packs
antacid
cough and cold medicine
antihistamine for allergies
anti-insect spray
eye drops
tweezers
scissors
safety pins
knife
sewing needle and thread
whistle
towel
mylar emergency blanket
If you are going to do more extensive hiking, you should include a high-quality tourniquet like the paramedics or military uses.?The cost may range in the neighborhood of $30, but it will definitely be worth it if you had a very serious injury that would require that type intervention to save a life. It is hard to predict exactly what you will need in an emergency.
