First 90 days...

Starting a new job can be a daunting experience, especially if you're transitioning from a different role or company.

How did time go so fast? I guess from today onwards I cant really introduce myself as the new person managing the global corporate and leadership training...

Its been 90 days since I started working for Dufry. That's 2,160 hours, or 129,600 minutes, or 7,776,000 seconds... but who's counting, right?... 3 months!!! We all know how important these 90 days are in any employee journey. It's been 90 days since I took the leap of faith and switched industries from hospitality to retail. And boy, oh boy, what a ride it has been! From designing the way forward for corporate and leadership on a global scale to meeting new colleagues, it has been an experience worth sharing.

The transition was not easy, I must say. The first few weeks felt like being thrown in the deep end of a swimming pool without knowing how to swim. But, hey, isn't that why we take on new challenges? To push ourselves out of our comfort zones and grow. The irony is not lost on me that just a few months ago, I wrote an article about my struggles with being in the comfort zone. I acknowledged how uncomfortable it made me feel and how difficult it was to stay in that space. But I also recognized the importance of pushing ourselves out of that zone, of taking on new challenges, and growing as individuals.

And now, here I am, in a new industry, with new responsibilities, and a whole new set of challenges to conquer. It's funny how life works sometimes. Just when we think we've gotten comfortable, we have to find a new challenge to push ourselves further. For me, that challenge is always self-imposed. I am the only one who can truly make the decision to seek out new opportunities and take on new challenges. And I am grateful for the opportunity to do so.

The learning curve was steep, but the experiences and lessons I have picked up along the way have been invaluable. Everything I learned from my past leaders, both the good and the bad, has helped me navigate this new terrain. It's like I've been training for this moment all along.

As someone who does triathlons...for fun, I know the value of endurance and perseverance. And those qualities have come in handy in my new role. When the going gets tough, I remind myself that I am capable of enduring and pushing through the challenges. And boy, oh boy, it is satisfying to come out the other side of those challenges!

One of the reasons I made the move was that although life was amazing, I wanted to explore further and take myself and my career to the next level. I wanted to see if the grass was greener on the other side, and not only was it greener, but the forest here is amazing! Taking that leap of faith has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. The experience of changing industries has been a masterclass in change management and expectations. Managing my own expectations, my team's expectations, and the expectations of senior leadership has been an ongoing balancing act. But I am grateful for the opportunity to design the way forward for corporate and leadership on a global scale. It's not often you get to be part of something that big, and it's been an honour to be trusted with that responsibility.

Choosing your own boss is like getting to pick your own teammate for a major competition it's a game-changer. It means you can base your decision on your own values and aspirations, not just the job description. During the recruitment process, I knew that I was taking the job mostly to work with him.

In conclusion, the past 90 days have been a journey of growth, challenges, and satisfaction. And while the road ahead may have its bumps and twists, I am excited to be on this journey and see where it takes me. I am grateful for the experiences, lessons, and opportunities that have come my way. There is not much new wisdom on the list below, but I want to reflect on the most important points of the first 90 days...

  • Get to know your colleagues: Take the time to get to know your new colleagues and build relationships with them. You will be working with them for a long time, and it's always good to have a good working relationship. You never know when you will be doing all nighters!
  • Ask questions: Don't be afraid to ask questions. It's better to ask for help than to make mistakes that could have been avoided.
  • Learn the company culture: Every company has its own unique culture, and it's important to learn about it. Understanding the company culture can help you work more effectively and feel more comfortable in your new environment.
  • Set goals: Set some personal and professional goals for yourself. This will help you stay focused and motivated, and it will also give you something to work towards.
  • Take care of yourself: Starting a new job can be stressful, so make sure you take care of yourself. Get enough rest, eat healthy, exercise, and take breaks when you need them.

Starting a new job is an exciting and challenging time, but with the right mindset and preparation, it can be a rewarding experience. By being proactive and adaptable, you can navigate the challenges of a job transition and thrive in your new role. Remember to stay focused on your goals, seek out support when needed, and always keep an open mind to new opportunities.

Cheers for the next 90 days... e-see you soon!
