Fired Up for Fire Safety
John D. Solomon Fellowship for Public Service
The first student fellowship with the City of New York devoted specifically to emergency management.
By Liz Bekerman, New York City Fire Department Fellow
“Put the wet stuff on the red stuff” was the extent of my knowledge on firefighting prior to the beginning of my fellowship. Little did I know how complex and intricate the planning, operations, and administration of the FDNY actually are.
With only a couple of months left in my time as a John D. Solomon Fellow for the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), I feel humbled to reflect on my experiences of the past year. While at the FDNY, my work has been split between the Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs (IGA) and Community Affairs (CAU) units. The duality of this position has allowed me to get a well-rounded view of FDNY’s External Affairs and understand the importance of collaboration in the workplace.

With the support of Sandra Sanchez, Director of Community Affairs, I have assisted the CAU team by raising awareness for FDNY initiatives and resources. I regularly attend meetings of the Manhattan and Brooklyn community boards where I share fire safety tips and support the Department’s mission of connecting New Yorkers to services. Additionally, following fatal fires, I pinpoint community centers, houses of worship, and other locations of community gathering to execute relevant reactive fire safety education programming.
Under the watchful eye of Madison Hernandez, Intergovernmental Coordinator, I was immediately brought into the daily happenings of the IGA team. Every week, I participate in state and city bill review to highlight those which are relevant to the Department. I’ve assisted the team in prepping for FDNY participation at hearings and meetings on the federal, state, and city level. I’ve even gone on a few field trips to council meetings City Hall and Department events at which elected officials were in attendance!
I want to thank my supervisors, the New York City Fire Department, and the John D. Solomon Fellowship for allowing me the opportunities of the past year. I’m excited to round out a successful year and continue my career of public service!
