Firebird Rockery Stone.. a must see.
Firebird has to be one of my favourite rockery stones, the colours and swirls are so dramatic.
Over the years I've seen Firebird used in water features and as feature pieces, but my favourite use.. Japanese gardens. Lending itself to many formations, the "man, heaven and earth" formation has been picked out so many times in the yards I've lost count.
It's great to see the rock coming into stock for the season.
Firebird is hard gneiss.. low water absorption means if it goes green in a pond location it can be cleaned off to present the stunning colours again. When wet it's a stunning black with bright pink swirls, every piece being different.. think swirls not banding.
I've spent many an evening wandering around the quarry picking out stones just because they were so stunning and individual. Now our "Boulder Hunter" does the same I guess we love rocks.
I really recommend viewing this rock, especially for Japanese gardens.. it's been used in so many over the years.. the Kyoto Garden in London being one of them.
Our "Boulder Hunter" also likes to spread the word about Perennial up in the Highlands to people in horticulture and posts to the #showusyamugperennial when he can.

1 年Im building a rockery. A constraint is all the rock for it (from 100kg bits down to aggregate size) must be single origin (or at least the same rock type). This so to recreate an authentic feel as found in wild. I noted one supplier down south that understood this and offered single origin rock in all sizes but the delivery cost was too great. i visited the local castlecary depot; while gneiss there is the right colour and sizes ideal, i wasnt able to identify a matching aggregate. I notice that meadowgrass marble is available as larger rocks but also as an aggregate product (6mm size), this would be ideal if only white were not undesired for the project. My question is whether the gniess has any chippings as a by product of its manufacture and whether such a product can be made available? The only alternative is another rock product that is also grey (but not the limestone) that has a matching aggregate.Hope that makes sense. I intend to order 3 tonnes not including 2 bags of suitable aggregate?
