At Aleron Fire Protection, we're proud to support National Student Fire Safety Week by urging students to stay vigilant and prioritise fire safety.
For many, this may be the first time living independently, whether in rented properties or university accommodation. To help ensure a safe start, we’ve put together some essential fire safety tips for new or soon-to-be university students:
1. Check your smoke alarms: Ensure they are working properly and never cover them.
2. Respond quickly to alarms: If the fire alarm goes off, evacuate immediately and safely.
3. Stay alert while cooking: Most fires in student accommodation start in the kitchen. Don’t leave cooking unattended, and keep flammable items, like tea towels, away from the hob.
4. Avoid electrical hazards: Don’t overload sockets and keep devices away from hazards like curtains, paper, and water.
5. Know your escape routes: Have a plan for a quick and safe exit in case of emergency.
6. Use alternatives to candles: Fragrance sprays or reed diffusers are safer options for creating a pleasant atmosphere.
7. Handle smoking materials carefully: Ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished, and use the correct chargers for e-cigarettes to avoid battery fires.
8. Be aware of fire risks: Stay informed, know your rights, and report any potential hazards.
9. In case of fire: Remember, Get out, Stay out, and Call 999.
By following these tips, we can all contribute to a safer environment for students living away from home.
Let’s work together to prioritise fire safety this year!
