The Fire Risks of Purpose-Built Blocks of Flats: an Exploration of Official Fire Incident Data in England

Today we've released an interim report relating to our continuing research work around Fire Safety in Purpose-built Blocks of Flats. We're hoping this will enrich and feed into conversations around the topic, of which there have been many, especially in recent years and since the dreadful fire at Grenfell Tower cost 72 lives.

The fact that fatalities from dwelling fires is at a 40 year low is certainly great news, but the real issue is how the risk of fatality is distributed across different kinds of dwellings. Sadly, over the past decade, if you live in a block of flats, you are almost twice as likely to die from a fire than if you live in a house, and more than twice as likely to be injured.

My sincere thanks go out to the people that, helpfully, reviewed it for us recently.

Just looking at the findings of your report when you stand back and analyse it it's going to be pretty obvious that the more densely packed accommodation is the more risk there is of fire spreading and the higher the accommodation is the more complexity there is in rescuing people from the fire. This analysis of extra data make sense and it helps us see the importance of rigorous compartmentation to reduce the likelihood of injury and death in high rise from fire
