What is XPRIZE?

XPRIZE , founded in 1994, is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering technological innovation through large-scale public competitions. These competitions aim to solve some of humanity's most pressing challenges by incentivizing teams worldwide to develop groundbreaking solutions.

Since its inception, XPRIZE has launched numerous competitions across various fields, including space exploration, healthcare, environmental sustainability, and education. As of now, XPRIZE has organized about 30 different competitions, each with clear, measurable goals and substantial monetary rewards, often in the millions of dollars, to motivate participants. The competitions are open to anyone, from professional scientists to high school students, encouraging diverse participation and unconventional approaches to problem-solving.

A Qualified Team in an XPRIZE Competition is a group that has passed the initial evaluation stage, demonstrating the potential of their proposed solution. These teams submit detailed technical proposals, which are evaluated by an independent Judging Panel. Becoming a Qualified Team is both a recognition and a privilege, offering several benefits:

1. Advancement to the next competition round
2. Share of a milestone prize purse
3. Access to state-of-the-art testing facilities
4. Increased visibility and networking opportunities
5. Validation of their concept by industry experts

The Qualified Team status not only acknowledges the team's innovative potential but also provides resources and exposure that can significantly impact their project's development and future success.

What is the XPRIZE Wildfire?

XPRIZE Wildfire is a 4-year, $11 million competition incentivizing the innovation of firefighting technologies that will end destructive wildfires so that humanity and beneficial wildfire can safely co-exist. The prize aims to transform current wildfire management approaches through the development of new technologies that can rapidly and accurately detect, characterize, and respond to wildfires before they become destructive.

The competition is designed to synergistically transform how fires are managed and fought across two tracks:

• $5M Space-Based Wildfire Detection and Intelligence Track (Track A)
• $5M Autonomous Wildfire Response Track (Track B)

In the Autonomous Wildfire Response Track, teams have 10 minutes to autonomously detect and suppress a high-risk fire in a 1000 km2, environmentally challenging area, leaving any decoy fires untouched.

What is Team Fire Foresight?

Team Fire Foresight is a consortium competing in the XPRIZE Wildfire, consisting of four founding startups:

• Little Place Labs
• Robotics Cats
• Taz Drone Solutions

I've been working on XPRIZE Wildfire since January 2022. When I first learned about the competition, I believed it would take a cross-organization team with multi-domain expertise to combat the XPRIZE Wildfire challenges. I talked to deep-tech startups and research institutions in different countries to explore potential teamwork in XPRIZE Wildfire. I am grateful I met my Fire Foresight teammates. It is a blessing to collaborate with people who have aligned goals, and complementary skills, and include each other. The four startups operate on five continents and have different fire seasons, allowing us to conduct field tests in diverse environments around the clock throughout the year and advance our technologies faster. It’s a fantastic combination!
