When the response phase of a disaster is over and the fire department leaves the scene, those who have lost their home or become displaced are usually left to figure out their recovery on their own. The days, weeks, and months following any type of disaster event is a nightmare for most and a time where disaster survivors face many unforeseen challenges and pitfalls. Most survivors don't know what to do in the aftermath of a disaster and wish they had a road-map to help them navigate the recovery process and the rebuilding of their lives.
In an effort to help their community be more resilient to disasters, The San Bernardino County Fire Department recently adopted The Red Guide to Recovery - Resource Handbook for Disaster Survivors to help their citizens recover from fires, floods, earthquakes and other natural or man-made disasters. After the Blue Cut Wildfire destroyed 105 homes in August of this year, the San Bernardino Fire Department Office of Emergency Services was able to partner with Southern California Edison and the TESORO Corporation who donated funds to bring The Red Guide to Recovery to fire departments throughout the county. Now, firefighter's spend a few minutes with their residents before they go back into service and give them the information they need to transition from the event towards recovery.
This unique public / private partnership makes it possible for the fire service to have a resource that doesn't impact their budget and fills an unmet need for those who face the loss of their home or personal property.
