Have you ever played with fire and come out without getting burnt? If the answer is yes, then you are an exception. Your destiny is waiting to reward you with the reaction.
If you read the Vedic scriptures as part of Sanatan Dharma, you will find various stories of Rishi Munis (pious saints) performing Tapasya (penance). Suddenly, an Apsara (a beautiful lady from a heavenly planet) comes and pierces the heart of the Rishi Muni with her lusty glance and behavior. Most of the Rishis get caught by this charm and lose the momentum of their pious activities. How unfortunate! However, have you ever wondered why Vedic scriptures use Rishi Munis as examples in these stories?
The Rishi Munis were people at the highest level of spiritual realization. They practiced celibacy, integrity, steadfastness, and selflessness. They were only concerned with the welfare of the whole society, maintaining their purity and devotional service or meditational practices. The question arises: why, after reaching such a high position, do they get deviated by beautiful Apsaras? Indeed, it is surprising. However, if you deeply analyze the pattern of Vedic scriptures, you will realize that these characters were chosen carefully. They taught us that even a highly exalted person can become a victim of material allurements if they do not pay enough attention, even for a single moment. Material nature is powerful, and it is difficult to deal with the menu brought by tempting situations. If you are successful, then congratulations. Now be ready for the next test (a higher one). If you fail, you need to retake the test until you succeed.
The holy book and life manual, Shrimad Bhagvad Gita mentions about the concept of self control and warn us citing example of an exalted people. Even those people are not outside the purview of negative influence if they don't take necessary precaution. Now, if powerful and knowledgeable Rishi Munis struggle to deal with tempting situations, what about us? We are under the influence of envy, pride, greed, anger, and many other devils. Hence, it is always better to know our own level and try to elevate it through humble practice of self-realization. Bhartiya Sanskriti indeed grooms all people to strive for and achieve the supreme stage of life: self-realization.
Another extreme pitfall of playing with fire is overconfidence. If you are lucky enough not to get burnt by the fire, do not feel superior. It is worse than getting affected by fire. Since you could not feel the reaction immediately, the reaction will come manifold (with interest), and it is again a loss of higher magnitude. After all, if inflation affects our wealth and investment, how can our own karma not get affected over time?
In a nutshell, do not play with fire. If you know or see the danger, prepare yourself to fight it. If required, take calculated risks, but do not underestimate the power of karma and destiny. A conscious choice is to learn from your own mistakes, and even better than that is to learn from others' mistakes. If you have seen someone getting burnt, immediately learn from it and act accordingly. Do not fall into the notion of experimenting yourself. After all, you should not taste poison knowing it can kill you, especially when you have seen it happen to others.
