During the tumultuous years of the Revolutionary War, American soldiers faced numerous challenges, not least among them being the scarcity of food. Amidst the harsh conditions of battle and camp life, soldiers relied on ingenuity to sustain themselves. One such survival staple was the humble "fire cake," a simple yet vital provision made from basic ingredients: flour, water, and salt when available.
Ingredients & Supplies
Step 1 - Mix the Dough
Creating fire cakes was a straightforward process, beginning with mixing the flour and water until they formed a thick, damp dough. Soldiers exercised prudence, adding water gradually to achieve the desired consistency, akin to that of play dough.
Step 2 - Form the Biscuits
With the dough ready, soldiers would form flat biscuits about the size of their palms. If the dough proved sticky, a sprinkling of flour aided in its manipulation.
Step 3 - Press Holes (Optional)
Some soldiers opted to use a fork to press holes into the top of the cakes, though this step was not universally practiced.
Step 4 - Cooking Methods
In the modern context, fire cakes are conveniently baked in ovens at 400 degrees for approximately 40 minutes, until the edges attain a desirable hardness. However, during the Revolutionary War, soldiers resorted to more primitive methods.
Original Cooking Instructions
Soldiers would place the dough on rocks amidst the flames or directly onto the ashes of their campfires, allowing the fire's heat to harden the cakes. Once sufficiently cooked, the bread would be removed to cool.
For preservation, the fire cakes would be returned to the fire, where they were cooked until dry and hardened further. This method ensured longevity, enabling the cakes to endure for a month or more.
