Data from?interviews of 92 Grade 9 – 12 students referred to the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support Team during the 2023 school year.

Question 4 – What talent or skill makes you stand out from others?

84% of students identified a talent or skill that made them stand out. These talents ranged from academic (I am good at math, I am bilingual) and pro-social (empathic, kind, good listener, good friend) to athletic (I am good at football, soccer, horseback riding, dancing) and art (I am a good baker, artist, makeup person)

Using an index card, Google Sheets, or an interview, create favorable conditions for learning and a class Universal Design profile by asking the following questions.

• What helps you feel welcomed?
• How do you like to be greeted?
• What strengths do you bring to classrooms??
• What do you like most about school so far??
• What would you like to see changed???

With these answers as a starting point, educators understand who these students are. How do they learn best? What are their unique strengths, cultural experiences, and learning styles? What background knowledge might they bring to a new learning situation? How do they communicate effectively??
