Fingerprints and Tree Rings
The hidden patterns of leadership and nature.

Fingerprints and Tree Rings

Both fingerprints and tree rings are distinct to whom they belong to. They are both shaped by time and experience.

Tree rings tell the a tree's life story marked by seasons of growth, challenges and survival. Trees don't waste time trying to be a different type of tree, or grow against their nature. Rather, they embrace and even protect their ability to grow purposefully, through challenges, WITHIN their nature.

For business leaders, this serves as a reminder that every leader's style and journey is unique. Just as a tree grows stronger through periods of abundance and scarcity, so too do leaders as they develop wisdom and resilience through their careers. In many ways, rings represent milestones- times when adversity or overwhelming odds tested their leadership when growth was rapid. Just like the tree, those layers of experience add to the sturdiness and richness of their story....and impact.

5 Lessons for Leaders:

  • Embrace your unique leadership style. Just like fingerprints- every business leader has a distinctive imprint. Embrace it! It is your competitive advantage! This of course requires understanding how your journey, style and decisions along the way have shaped your identity. The "thru-lines" of this analysis will illuminate the truth about your style- it's strengths and weaknesses. The more you lean into what makes you unique- the stronger your identity will stand out.

Tools like The Nivalmi Zookeeper Framework can be helpful to identify if your style is more like a Lion, Lemur, Dolphin or Elephant and what that means for you and those around you. Armed with this understanding of YOUR style enables each new "ring" (or experience) to strengthen your capacity to lead with confidence and wisdom...just as a tree grows more resilient over time.

  • Growth Over Time Tree rings show us how much a tree has grown each year. Some years the rings are thick, others they’re narrow—depending on how tough or favorable the conditions were. The same goes for businesses. There will be times when growth is fast and exciting, and times when it’s slow and challenging. Both matter. Both shape your company’s strength and resilience. As a leader, your role is to keep steady through the seasons of growth.
  • Adapting to Challenges If a tree goes through a drought, you can see it in the rings—thin and tightly packed. Similarly, when we face challenges as leaders, those experiences leave their mark. But here’s the thing: trees adapt and keep growing, and so do we. Each challenge we navigate builds layers of experience that shape us into better, more resilient leaders.
  • Legacy is Built Layer by Layer Fingerprints are permanent, just like tree rings. The decisions we make as leaders don’t just disappear. They leave lasting impressions on the people we lead and the businesses we build. With every decision, every action, you're laying down rings of legacy. Over time, those rings form the story of your leadership. Make them count.
  • Diversity in Nature, Diversity in Leadership Just like no two fingerprints or tree rings are the same, diversity in leadership brings strength to organizations. Nature thrives on diversity—it’s what helps ecosystems survive and flourish. In leadership, diversity of thought, experience, and background enriches decision-making and creates more robust, resilient teams.

In summary, the next time you observe your hands or gaze at a gorgeous, 200 year old mighty tree, remember: growth isn’t always easy, but the marks it leaves behind shape us into the leaders we are.

Keep growing in your nature, purpose and style. Embrace the building of your layers!
