Introduction
Throughout the Bible, the phrase "The Finger of God" is used to demonstrate His power, authority, and divine intervention. This expression appears in moments of judgment, deliverance, and divine authorship. These scriptures reveal His ability to act decisively and unmistakably. They provide insights into His sovereignty and interaction with mankind. Today’s believers can draw wisdom and encouragement from these accounts. Each reference to "The Finger of God" carries a message that remains relevant. From the display of miraculous signs to the writing of His law, God’s Finger signifies His direct involvement. Let us explore these scriptures in their entirety and understand their significance for us today.
Scriptural References and Their Significance
Exodus 8:18-19 (AMPC): "And the magicians tried by their enchantments and secret arts to bring forth lice, but they could not. Then there were lice upon man and beast. Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, This is the finger of God! But Pharaoh’s heart was hardened and strong and he would not listen to them, just as the Lord had said." This scripture marks a turning point in the confrontation between God’s power and human sorcery. The Egyptian magicians, who previously imitated some of Moses' signs, reached their limit. They recognized an act beyond human capability. The "Finger of God" here symbolizes His supreme authority over all spiritual forces. Today, believers can trust that no power in the world can surpass God’s might. His divine intervention remains unquestionable, even when opposition arises.
Exodus 31:18 (AMPC): "And He gave to Moses, when He had ceased communing with him on Mount Sinai, the two tables of the Testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God." Here, the phrase highlights divine authorship. The Ten Commandments, inscribed by His own hand, demonstrate His unchangeable moral standard. These commandments were not dictated for men to write; they were written by God Himself. This emphasizes their divine origin and permanence. For believers today, this scripture affirms the unshakable foundation of God’s laws. His word is not man-made; it carries divine authority. Living by these commandments remains essential, guiding us in righteousness.
Deuteronomy 9:10 (AMPC): "And the Lord gave me the two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written all the words which the Lord had spoken to you on the mount out of the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly." This scripture reiterates God’s direct involvement in giving His law. His presence was accompanied by fire, a symbol of purification and divine holiness. The words were not only spoken but also permanently inscribed. For believers today, this is a reminder that God’s word is not temporary. His instructions stand firm throughout all generations. His commands are not subject to cultural shifts but are eternal truths guiding our walk with Him.
Luke 11:20 (AMPC): "But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has [already] come upon you." Jesus used this expression to illustrate the undeniable power of God’s kingdom. His authority over demonic forces was not from human strength but from divine power. When demons were cast out, it was a direct manifestation of God’s presence. For believers today, this is a reminder that the same power is at work in our lives. The kingdom of God is not a distant reality; it is actively breaking strongholds even now. For clarification purposes, a stronghold is, a spiritual stronghold can be considered a deeply ingrained negative thought pattern, habit, or belief that acts as a barrier to spiritual growth, often manifesting as emotions like fear, anger, pride, addiction, self-doubt, unforgiveness, or a controlling mindset; essentially, anything that holds someone captive to a destructive way of thinking or behaving, preventing them from experiencing true freedom and connection with God.?
