Writing a book or creating a new modality can be one of the most thrilling—and frustrating—journeys you’ll ever take. You’re weaving your story, expertise, or vision into something tangible, something that could resonate deeply with others. But let’s be honest: the process doesn’t always feel magical.
Maybe your head is buzzing with ideas, but none of them seem to land on the page. Or maybe, you’re stuck revising the same sentence for the tenth time, longing for a sense of progress.
Here’s the truth: there’s no single “right” way to create. The magic lies in understanding your unique rhythm—and learning to work with it instead of against it.
Meet the Creative Archetypes: Bees, Crabs, Owls, and Hummingbirds
Each archetype reflects a distinct approach to writing, offering insight into your creative strengths and struggles. Understanding your archetype can transform the way you see yourself, turning those perceived “blocks” into your greatest gifts.
The Bees: Buzzing with Ideas, Energized by Connection Bees thrive on collaboration and brainstorming. You light up in a group setting, buzzing with ideas that refine and evolve as you share. Movement and energy are your fuel, but slowing down to focus can feel like a challenge.
The Crabs: Digging Deep, Driven by Perfection Crabs excel at meticulous, focused solo work. You dig deep into your ideas, shaping them with care and precision. While this creates beautifully crafted writing, the quest for perfection can leave your words overworked and lacking authenticity.
The Owls: Wise, Patient, and Strategic Owls approach writing with careful planning and strategic thinking. You map out your ideas clearly, ensuring everything fits together seamlessly. You want an story arc, outline, scenes and bios on every character before you get started. But too much structure can stifle spontaneity or lead to analysis paralysis.
The Hummingbirds: Light, Agile, and Intuitive Hummingbirds flit from idea to idea, following their curiosity wherever it leads. You’re quick, agile, and inspired, making surprising connections. You can write seven chapters in a single afternoon, but sticking with one project much less finishing one can feel like a challenge.

Why Your Archetype Matters
Writing isn’t about changing who you are—it’s about discovering what makes your process uniquely yours. Bees, Crabs, Owls, and Hummingbirds each bring something vital to the creative journey.
Your archetype reflects your strengths, your creative rhythm, and the voice only you can share with the world. And here’s the secret: perhaps you’re a hybrid—a Hummingbird with a stinger, an Owl with pinchers (because sometimes even the wisest among us need a little zing). The key is honoring your unique gifts and getting support in the places you need it.
What’s Your Archetype?
So, are you a meticulous Crab, patiently shaping each word with care? A buzzing Bee, energized by collaboration and brainstorming? Perhaps you’re a wise Owl, mapping out your vision with thoughtful strategy, or a vibrant Hummingbird, darting between bursts of inspiration and weaving brilliance as you go.
Too often, we’re told to fix our natural processes to fit someone else’s mold. But what if your way of working wasn’t a block? What if it was your gift?
This is your invitation to explore and celebrate your creative rhythm. Let’s uncover what makes your voice—and your journey—distinctly yours.
Writing Prompt: Have you felt the push to change your creative process to fit a mold? Or have you experienced a breakthrough by embracing your natural rhythm?
Share your story in the comments—I’d love to hear how you’re honoring your creative flow.
P.S. Would you love a quiz to discover your archetype? If this is something you’d find helpful (or just fun!), let me know. Your feedback will guide what I create next for this space.
