Finding Your Why: A Step-by-Step Process to Discover Your Purpose

In our last discussion, we explored the importance of knowing your "why". Your core purpose that drives your decisions, fuels your motivation, and shapes your life. But how do you actually find your why? The process involves deep introspection, mindset shifts, and using tools like NLP, hypnotherapy, and frameworks like Simon Sinek’s Find Your Why methodology. Let’s dive into a structured approach to uncovering your true purpose.

Why Finding Your Why Matters?

Before we look at the process, let’s revisit the benefits of discovering your why:

  • Clarity and Direction: You’ll make more intentional choices that align with your purpose.
  • Increased Motivation: Challenges become easier to navigate when you have a compelling reason behind your actions.
  • Resilience in Difficult Times: Your why provides emotional strength during setbacks.
  • Better Decision-Making: Your values and purpose become a guiding compass for personal and professional choices.

On the other hand, not knowing your why can lead to:

  • Lack of Fulfilment: You might chase goals that don’t truly satisfy you.
  • Burnout: Without a deeper purpose, motivation wanes, and exhaustion sets in.
  • Self-Doubt and Indecision: A weak sense of direction often leads to uncertainty and a fear of making the wrong choices.

The Process of Finding Your Why

Let’s break this down into a structured approach using a mix of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), hypnotherapy, and Simon Sinek’s framework.

1. Uncover Patterns from Your Past (NLP’s Timeline Therapy)

Your why often lies in your past experiences. Using an NLP technique called Timeline Therapy, you can:

  • Identify pivotal moments that shaped your life (both positive and negative).
  • Recognise common themes in your happiest and most fulfilling experiences.
  • See how these moments connect to your values and beliefs.

Exercise: Write down the five most defining moments in your life and look for patterns in what made them significant. This is easier with someone trained in the technique, especially when dealing with traumatic experiences. 2. Engage in Deep Subconscious Work (Hypnotherapy Visualisation)

Your subconscious mind holds key insights into your purpose. Hypnotherapy can help access this deeper wisdom.

Visualisation Technique:

  1. Close your eyes and enter a relaxed state through deep breathing.
  2. Imagine your ideal life where you feel fully alive, purposeful, and fulfilled.
  3. Observe the details—where are you? What are you doing? How do you feel?
  4. Take note of what stands out—these details can give you clues about your why.

This is an exercise best done with a professional. Again please use my bio link to book a call if it is something you wish to discuss.

3. Identify Core Themes (Simon Sinek’s “Golden Circle”)

Simon Sinek’s Find Your Why suggests that clarity comes from answering three key questions:

  • What do you do? (Your roles, career, activities)
  • How do you do it? (Your strengths and unique skills)
  • Why do you do it? (Your deeper motivation—this is where we focus!)

Exercise: Reflect on your daily actions and ask why you engage in them. Keep asking why until you get to the core motivation behind them. This is best done with a 2nd person, who can more objectively see the patterns and may spot things you don't.

4. Align Your Why with Your Future (NLP’s Reframing Technique)

Once you have an idea of your why, it’s important to align it with your future goals. NLP’s reframing technique helps you:

  • Shift your mindset to see challenges as opportunities.
  • View past failures as stepping stones toward fulfilling your purpose.
  • Transform limiting beliefs into empowering ones that align with your why.

Example: If you fear career change but your why involves helping others, you can reframe your mindset to see change as necessary growth toward making a bigger impact. This is an exercise you can do on your own, although as with many things NLP it is best done with a trained Practitioner or Master Practitioner.

Living Your Why Daily

Finding your why is only the beginning. To make it part of your life, you must:

  1. Revisit Your Why Regularly: Keep a journal or create a vision board as a reminder.
  2. Make Purposeful Choices: Evaluate your daily decisions based on whether they align with your why.
  3. Seek Support: Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who encourage your growth.

Final Thoughts

Finding your why is a powerful journey that transforms your mindset, decision-making, and overall fulfilment. Through NLP, hypnotherapy, and structured reflection, you can uncover your purpose and start living with intention.

I did a podcast episode on remembering your why for teachers. Knowing your why and keeping it in mind is so important but it is also so easy to forget.
