Finding Your Why

Finding Your Why

When I was 20 years-old and going to school at Texas A&M University, I got to be a part of a local? startup in College Station, TX. There was a brand new restaurant coming to town, and I was hired on as part of the wait staff. I was thrilled to be a part of this. There were over 300 people who applied for various positions and I was hired as a part of the original 72. It became a great experience for me, because I got to learn customer service, point of sales systems, logistics and the operations of the restaurant. Great experiences to have, right???

There was one incredible night, a very busy night, when there was a lot going on in the kitchen. There was a lot going on out in the dining room. The kitchen staff got a bit backed up with the orders.? I remember the manager getting so upset with the way things were going that he lost his temper and threw a chocolate dessert across the kitchen. That dessert hit the wall and slid all the way down to the floor. I remember looking at the mess and thinking, “Is he for real? Is this the way bosses behave?”? And that's when I learned I was not long for working for other people. The die was cast.? I would make sure I was suited to be the boss, set and maintain control and set a better example.?

Corporate America

After college, I, like many other people, joined the ranks of corporate America. I started my professional career in the semiconductor industry, and then I went from that into the world of IndyCar racing, where I worked on the business side of IndyCar team. Then, at 28 years-old, I had an opportunity to meet with my friend, a consultant, and he helped me understand franchising.?

He introduced me to the whole new world of owning my own business, and I was very grateful. While I knew that I wasn't long for working for other people, I also figured out that I needed a business plan, systems, processes, and all the things that franchises could give me. It actually led me to becoming a franchise consultant with FranNet, as well as owning other franchises.?

Your Personal Timeline

By the way, when I find people begin thinking about business ownership, it isn't always early in life. I realize not every one of my clients have always thought they will one day own their own business, but maybe it comes to them later on. I always find they have “why,” a goal they have always had or even an event like mine that becomes a turning point. If you are spending the time to read this, chances are your “why” has led you to this article.?

Consider your why and the opportunity, and I'd be glad to help you. Please scan the code that you see here and let's talk about it.
