Finding Your Well (Part 2)

Finding Your Well (Part 2)

Like most amateur quilters, I have several quilting projects in progress. Currently, I have three big quilts that I'm working on - one for each daughter. They got to pick out the colors for their quilt, and they love checking on the progress as it comes together gradually.

There is just something about quilting that really appeals to my creative spirit. Maybe it is the OCD part of my brain that likes the straight lines and patterns that all line up.

I've been working on them during weekends, but last night I took a few minutes to complete several sections of one quilt. The panels are long rectangles made from a solid print and a coordinating pattern print. I'm currently in the phase where I sew long seams to join the rectangles together.

This design is simple, but still requires very intense mental focus. If a seam doesn't line up correctly, it will be obvious in the finished quilt, because the lines won't be straight!

Went back to work on a writing project, and I was amazed by what happened next.

All the unknowns and loose ends were gone.

The copy just flowed from my fingers as if by magic.

For me, that is how writing goes. If I force it, the language gets choppy and tight. I have a hard time focusing on the project and start procrastinating.

You probably have a mental trigger that helps you reach that extreme focus.

Are you using that to your advantage?

Let me know if you would like to help with my quilting projects - I'm sure we could work something out!

Huh. I don't know if I have a mental trigger. Sometimes when I write it just flows out and other times it's like pulling teeth. I can't find a correlation other than sometimes waiting until the last minute makes things happen.

Sometimes you just need to step away and clear your head - amazing what happens when you go back to work. Love that you got your kids involved in the projects as well, Kelly Hale, CPA.

I made one quilt about 25 years ago. Never again! We do all have different tricks that work to get us back on track. But simply taking a break from trying to push through those barriers is key.
