Finding Your Way: Everyday Alignment to Stay on Track in Leadership, Business, and Personal Growth

Sometimes, it’s as simple as this: we either get clear on what matters or slowly drift off course without even noticing. I’ve been there, and I bet you have too. If you say you haven't, we both know you are full of "it".

This applies no matter if you are a CEO or working minimum wage, perhaps a student or even retired.

Life pulls us in all kinds of directions (good and not so pleasant and that is life, like it or not), and if we’re not careful, we look up one day and wonder, “How did I get here?”

Staying on track doesn’t require some big, life-changing plan. Often, it’s about finding those small moments to reconnect with what really matters to us. When we do that, we can grow intentionally instead of accidentally drifting into places that don’t feel right. It’s those small, daily steps that make the difference.

Here are five areas to keep an eye on.

1. Find Yourself vs. Lose Yourself

When we know who we are and what we stand for, we make (more) decisions with purpose. But when we’re lost in self-doubt or trying to meet others’ expectations, it’s easy to make choices that feel off. I’ve done it; we all have. I’ve even walked away from opportunities because I doubted myself.

Try This: Take just maybe five minutes tomorrow morning to connect with what matters to you. It may sound simple, but that quick check-in can mean the difference between a day that’s reactive and one that aligns with who you are. Ask, “How do I want to show up today?” Then, make it a habit to stay true to your values instead of just reacting to what comes up.

2. Spot Opportunities vs. Miss Opportunities

Opportunities don’t always come gift-wrapped; they often look like challenges. They’re uncomfortable, awkward, or just plain messy. But if we’re not paying attention, we miss them. We’ve all heard that growth lives on the other side of discomfort. It’s true: when we avoid what’s uncomfortable, we miss the chance to grow.

Idea: Think back on a recent challenge and ask, “Was there an opportunity here I didn’t see?” Chances are, there was. There’s a quiet power in seeing potential where others don’t. It’s like discovering a hidden path that’s been there all along, waiting for you to take the first step. So, take one small step—even if it’s just jotting down a new idea. It’s all about creating opportunities from what’s right in front of us.

3. Take Control of Your Time vs. Lose Time

Time is our biggest asset, and how we use it makes all the difference. The world throws countless distractions at us, but time? That’s the one thing we can’t get back (and there is no use in crying over yesterday, what's today going to look like?). How we spend it shows what we value. If you spend countless hours on social media, what does that demonstrate about what you value? Being intentional with our time is a way of protecting what matters.

Try This: Start each day with your top three priorities. Ask, “What do I need to do to move these forward today?” Then, stick to your plan, and be cautious with anything that might pull you away from what matters. When you start with clarity, there’s power in every decision. Set that foundation, then defend it—because it does matter.

4. Build Confidence vs. Let Doubt Take Over

Confidence isn’t about feeling ready; it’s about taking the first step, even if it’s a small one. Sometimes, the things that scare us most are the things that grow us the most. The truth? You can’t get better at anything if you’re not willing to step into the unknown.

Challenge Yourself: Think of one area where you’ve been holding back. Growth doesn’t come from comfort—it comes from the courage to start, especially when we’re scared. Each small step builds belief in what we can handle. Take a step today, even if it’s just sending an email or making a call. Confidence builds through action, not by waiting until you feel “ready.”

5. Stay Connected to Your Values vs. Drift Off Course

Living true to our values takes regular check-ins. Life changes, we change, and staying connected to ourselves requires recalibration. Let’s be honest: this isn’t a one-time thing; it’s a constant practice to keep ourselves grounded in what matters.

Check-In: Set aside a few minutes to look at your goals. Even a five-minute check-in can make sure we’re moving toward a life that feels right—not just “busy.” Ask yourself, “Are my actions aligned with what really matters to me?” If they aren’t, make adjustments right away. Small tweaks help keep us on track.

Your Turn: Reflect and Take Action

Where are you today? Are you making time for what matters, leaning into new opportunities, or maybe just feeling a bit off track? We’ve ALL been there. It’s the small, intentional choices we make every day that keep us moving toward the life we want.

Take Action: What’s one thing you’re going to focus on today—time, clarity, or a new opportunity? Every day is a chance to start fresh and get closer to what feels right. Whatever it is, start with a small step and see where it takes you.

If you’re anything like me, you know that staying aligned isn’t always easy—it’s a journey of small steps, honest check-ins, and sometimes course corrections. I’d love to hear how you’re approaching it today. What’s one focus or small step that’s helping you stay connected to what matters? Hit reply and share it with me—I’d truly love to know and walk alongside you on this path.
