For trauma survivors, the pain of their experience can be debilitating and it can leave them feeling as though their voice has been taken from them. They may feel unseen, unheard, and as a result it can leave them with the feeling of emptiness. Sandra knows exactly what it is like to have her voice taken from her because she is a survivor of sexual abuse and trauma. As a public speaker, Sandra boldly shares her story with her audiences in an effort to help them through their pain and inspire them to persevere. As a life coach, Sandra listens to her client's stories, comforts them, and guides them to live fulfilled lives beyond the pain of their past. Today, my goal is to share Sandra's story with my audience in an effort to spread awareness and guide victims to seek help from a professional who has been in their shoes and knows their pain.
"One in four girls and one in 53 boys under the age of 18 will suffer from childhood sexual abuse this year. Every 68 minutes an assault will occur and every 9 seconds the victim is a child." RAINN.org
As a child, Sandra lived in a home with an alcoholic mother who was mentally and emotionally absent as well as abusive. She also had a father abused her in the worst way possible. Starting at the age of 6 years old Sandra's father began molesting her. Sandra's father threatened her and told her never to tell anyone about the abuse. When she went to her mother about it her mother dismissed her and did not believe her. Her mother was a severe alcoholic and because of this was not capable of taking care of her children. From the age of 6 years old, Sandra began cleaning her family's home and preparing meals for the family since her mother was not in a condition to do so. Sandra kept her secret for an incredible 54 years until finally documenting her story in her book, "Where hope and mercy meet," published in 2020. Sandra described feeling dirty inside, unloved, and empty for much of her life. As a young adult she left her home early and married young desperate attempt to escape her past. Sandra's former husband was also abusive and after having three children with her, he left the state with another woman never to be seen from or heard from again. He left his wife and three beautiful daughters and to this day no one has had contact with him. Unaddressed sexual trauma coupled with having an abusive partner who left you with the sole responsibilities of parenthood, and $19,000 in debt are nearly impossible to imagine. At the time her husband left, Sandra was in her last semester of college. However, she had to leave school so that she could support her children and pay off her former husband's debt.
With the weight of the world on her shoulders, Sandra sought psychiatric help to overcome her trauma. Through work, perseverance, and sheer mental fortitude she was able to finally work through her abusive past, overcome her pain, and find her voice. It is important to note that Sandra's story is not an isolated incident. Across the globe, in every city, and in every town this type of abuse remains pervasive. Understandably this topic is difficult to hear about and because of this it has remained taboo and is rarely discussed openly. However, it is critically important that this topic be addressed openly because victims needs to know they are not alone and that someone understands their pain. Sandra describes her work as aligning with her purpose and why she is here on this planet. She is here to serve victims, provide hope, and guide women all over the globe to lead better and more fulfilled lives. The only way she can do this is by sharing her story openly and lovingly in an effort to help make victims whole. Through her work over the years, Sandra has helped hundreds of women all over the globe overcome the trauma of sexual abuse and trauma. She spellbinds her audiences as she delivers her speeches in addition to helping her clients during private sessions. She describes herself as being the vehicle God has chosen to help victims and she approaches every day with immense gratitude as she knows she is walking with her purpose to help others.
I had the privilege of meeting Sandra at a speaking conference a few weeks ago and we hit it off instantly. Her spirit radiates light and her strength instantly shines through her. It was evident to me early on that Sandra was special and at that moment I decided to learn more about her. We immediately decided to work together and I felt compelled to help her share her story. When someone's mission and purpose is as powerful as Sandra's is, it becomes impossible to ignore. I immediately understood the magnitude of what Sandra was striving to do and it became my goal to help spread her message and reach a wide audience. Please do your part to share this story with your audience, connections, friends, and neighbors in an effort to spread awareness and end sexual violence.
