Finding Your Truth

Finding Your Truth

Belief is a deeply sensitive issue, especially when it touches on religious or spiritual inclinations. We’re cautioned to avoid discussing or questioning anybody’s faith because that’s an easy way to get into conflict. After all, wars have been fought on the basis that one faith system was incompatible with another. Although the underlying motivation for armed aggression usually had more to do with extending power, appropriating wealth and looting another people’s assets. History teaches us so much about the unchanging themes of human nature. But how did you arrive at your current system of beliefs?

It’s an intriguing question because we are all the products of so much indoctrination and conditioning that we rarely consider where our views come from. We just accept them as unshakable tenets of truth, even when we are forced to confront the inevitable contradictions within any belief system that should remind us of how limited our understanding might be. It doesn’t mean that we’re right or wrong. Rather, it’s a question of context. If truth is an indivisible and absolute concept, how can any of us claim to have an absolute knowledge of anything? Acknowledging the limitations of our understanding is an unavoidable step on the pathway to wisdom. The question today is where do you seek the well of enlightenment that will satisfy your thirst for knowledge and your quest for illumination?

According to many ancient traditions, the answer is not what we might expect. We are assured that the answer to what we seek cannot be found in a book. There are no words, either written or spoken, to express the sublime revelation of who we truly are, hidden beneath the layers of our personality and disguised by the fa?ades of our ego. The answer can only be experienced in the complete silence and stillness of a mind that has been brought to a state of emptiness. Can you imagine that? Of course not. Imagining anything involves mental activity. By practising mindfulness, it’s possible to achieve a natural and complete calm where thoughts and feelings no longer intrude. This is where all that remains is a pure expression of consciousness that does not react to anything. In the stillness, everything is revealed.

Perhaps your faith is leading you towards this experience, a revelation that allows you to expand your consciousness beyond today’s limitations. Let us remember that each of us is on this journey and that every pathway ultimately leads to the same destination.
