Trending News - Say Yes to You, and No to Overworking

Why do we continue to get caught in the trap of overwork? When do we know it's a leading driver for burnout? Burnout hinders our ability to learn and be productive. A recent article by Harvard Business Review gave some simple tips on saying Yes to YOU and No to overworking:

  • Identify the story you're telling yourself about work
  • Note if the story is rooted in actual fears
  • Reframe your mindset
  • Create a goal and share it with an accountability partner
  • Align what you need to do and what you want to do!

My Thoughts - Set Learning Priorities to Remain Refreshed

I think it is easy to get lost in the business of tasks and realize too late that we are overworked. If you are burned out it is easy to deprioritize investing time in yourself - which means you stop growing. One way to help ensure that overwork doesn't get in the way of your personal career goals is to set learning priorities.

Don't wait for someone else to set learning priorities for you. If this is your first time creating priorities, start small.

First, write down two or three learning priorities that you need to accomplish in the next month to move you towards completing a life goal.

Second, break down what you need to complete weekly to accomplish these priorities by the end of the month.

Third, schedule these weekly tasks into your calendar and stick to them.

Fourth, think of a reward you can give yourself if you accomplish your learning priorities at the end of the month.

Celebrating small wins reinforces building your new learning habits.

Lastly, tell someone about your plan. Speaking with others creates accountability.

I often hear people managers ask about how they can create more meaningful connections with their employees. One simple tip, before jumping into the business agenda, check in to see where team members are at today. As well, how they are coming into the meeting to understand what is top of mind for them and what might be some key blockers or priorities.

You may uncover new information that can help you strategically realign your meeting to result in more productive outcomes.

Our Community - The Power in Self Awareness

This week, Bruce Holoubek of Contracted Leadership shares his insights on burnout with the community.

Bruce reflected on times he stepped over the line, and was approaching burn out over the course of his career.

Bruce found that decreased health was the standard indicator that he had 'walked' the line. This often was a result of making himself always available. However, he found that learning to say NO isn't the universal solution.

Instead, it was to take a step back and become self-aware of the beliefs, style, and fears that motivate you to find the root cause of falling into the overwork trap.

As an analogy you want to make sure that if you are loading yourself up you want to load yourself up in alignment with your beliefs and values. It's like eating Thanksgiving dinner; your plate is only so big... do you want to add the cranberry sauce that you may not be so fond of, or do you want to add the green bean casserole that you love?

There is never a shortage of people asking you to add more to your plate.

The practice of self-awareness helped Bruce identify what 'work' aligns with his values so that he could have the space to carry forward the 'work' that aligned with what mattered most to his clients.

Systems and processes that work for some, do not work for everyone. Bruce encourages his leadership development clients to try different work styles, systems, processes and sprints until they found what worked for them. Knowing what 'fills your cup' and not your plate, builds a healthier relationship with work.
