Finding Your Perfect Networking Fit: An Independent Accountant's Journey

Finding Your Perfect Networking Fit: An Independent Accountant's Journey

Welcome to This SteadyHand Accounting Life Issue #1

Quick Take: From exclusive CPA groups to women's entrepreneurial leagues, discover how to strategically build your professional network while staying true to your values and goals.

When I decided to go solo and launch SteadyHand Accounting & Advisory , I reached out to my network to share the news. I've been incredibly lucky to have connected over the years with wonderful people, who are not only smart and excellent at what they do, they are also kind.

The response was overwhelming. To say that they have been supportive is an understatement. They have showered me with words of encouragement, sound advice, and client referrals. They know that a huge part of business is made up of relationships and referrals, and so do I.

But I also know that we can't rely on the referrals and support of one small group of people. After all, we're all busy working on our own business development and supporting our clients and our teams. So I knew from the get go that while I needed to work on continuing to nurture my network, and be a supportive resource to them, I also needed to expand my network.

Here's my strategic approach and the real-world results:

Local Independent Accountant Networks: The Bailey Group and the Independent Accountants Alliance of the Colorado Society of CPAs | COCPA

Investment: $500-750 annually, 4-6 hours monthly

Impact: There's nothing quite like connecting with fellow CPAs who've walked away from corporate or public accounting to build their own practices. They understand exactly where I am today and where I'm headed. And honestly, how challenging it is. Just this month, a fellow member helped me navigate a tricky client situation that saved me hours of research. They are the ones that know first-hand what no one tells you - as a solopreneur, you're suddenly wearing all the hats. Full time CMO? Check! Head of IT? Check! Head of Sales? Check, check! Plus, if you're not a member of your local professional organization, then what are you even doing?

Local Chamber Connection Organization: The Colorado Women's Chamber of Commerce

Investment: $500-750 annually, 2-3 hours monthly

Impact: While every chamber has its share of CPAs, I chose one that aligned with my passion for supporting other women. This decision has already led to two client referrals and countless connections with other women-owned businesses. It's been particularly rewarding to see how this choice helps me honor all the women who showed up loudly and firmly when I first announced my business launch.

B2B Referral Network Organization: MyFirestorm Five Points Chapter

Investment: $2,500 annually, 2 hours weekly

Impact: This is where intentionality meets community. Networking without a plan is just hanging out, and this group understands that. My chapter consists of ambitious, supportive, and successful professionals who are invested in helping everyone succeed. We're in it for the long-haul, and I'm equally invested in their success. Within three months, I've already received qualified referrals and made lasting connections with local business leaders.

Online Entrepreneurial Community Organization: Entreprenista

Investment: $1,500-$1,800 one-time fee, 3-4 hours daily

Impact: This network of women entrepreneurs is transforming how I approach business ownership. Beyond the promised visibility, marketing, and PR benefits, I'm gaining invaluable insights into running a successful business. Fellow members share their expertise on everything from sales techniques and marketing strategy to social media management and legal protection. Most importantly, they're teaching me how to enjoy the entrepreneurial journey while staying authentic to myself.

Finding Your Perfect Fit

Before joining any networking group, evaluate these key factors:

  • Goals & Value: Define your specific objectives - from finding new clients to building skills or community. Consider both what you'll gain and what unique value you can bring to the group.
  • Time & Money: Be realistic about your investment capacity. Factor in not just membership fees but also time for meetings, travel, and pre/post event preparation. Your total commitment should align with your business priorities.
  • Growth Potential: Assess both the opportunities gained and lost. A strong network can accelerate your business growth through new connections and knowledge sharing. The right group is worth the investment.
  • Cultural Fit: The network should energize and inspire you. Look for groups whose values and communication style match yours. Use trial periods to experience the culture firsthand.
  • Format: Consider whether virtual, in-person, or hybrid networking better suits your style and schedule. Virtual offers convenience and broader reach, while in-person builds deeper connections.

The key is finding a network that not only helps you grow but also feels natural to participate in.

I'd love to hear about your networking experiences! What platforms have been most valuable to you? Leave a note in the comments!

Quick Tips for Network Evaluation:

  • Request to attend a meeting as a guest before committing
  • Ask current members about their experience and ROI
  • Review the member directory to ensure your target audience is represented
  • Check the meeting schedule against your calendar
  • Consider the geographical reach you need
  • Evaluate the mix of virtual and in-person commitments

Your network is your net worth, but more importantly, it's your support system. Choose wisely, invest generously with your time and energy, and watch your business grow.
