Finding Your Own Space: A Corner to Recharge
Do you have a space of your own?
As much as I love the studio I’m in right now—the space where I’m speaking to you from—this is not it. I have a space of my own, a spot in my house that I gravitate to over and over again. Over time, I thought, you know what? This is my corner.
Why This Little Corner in My Home Matters
Quite frankly, it’s very simply a chair, very awkwardly positioned, facing out toward my backyard. But it gives me a full view of my bird feeders, the flowers, the backyard, and the garden. That’s where I have my first cup of coffee in the morning.
No matter how dark or light the season, that’s just my space. It’s where I recharge. I feel whole, safe, and secure there. For a little while, it gives me some mental space—a chance to really think through some things, recharge for the day, and prepare to jump in and change the world.
Even my pets like it. So I know I picked well, but should we all be looking for spaces like that in our homes? Are there places you naturally gravitate to in your house? Maybe you found that a space you didn’t originally consider your spot has become your spot over time.
Do You Have a Spot That’s Your ‘Happy Place’?
I think it’s really important. Virginia Woolf, many years ago, wrote about a room of hers and how important it is to have that creative space—our own mental corner—to rest, recharge, and focus on our well-being. It’s a kind of happy place, if you will.
If you have a place like that, let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear about it.
