Finding your Niche & then Focusing

What's Your Niche?

As a speaker, two of the most common questions people ask over and over again are, “What do you speak on and who do you speak to?” I have four main topics but oftentimes when I speak, I customize a topic for the audience I’ll be speaking to. However, I’m primarily a motivational speaker and invite audiences to live by choice, not chance or circumstance. When I speak, I encourage people to rewrite their past and stories, especially if their current stories no longer serve them.

Over the years, I have inspired financial advisers, electric companies, Comcast leadership teams, social services, educators, and many more companies and associations. Though different themes fit better with different audiences, the truth is I have a message and a story that I’ve been told many can relate to, and even be inspired by.

Many say you get rich in your niche but what if you make a bigger difference when you open yourself up to going to where someone needs your message? Though some clients are able to pay me better than others, and occasionally I do pro-bono speaking, when all is said and done I need to make a difference in the world a lot more than I need to make money. When people ask me, “What’s your niche?” I tell them, “My niche is individuals and groups who have a desire to be better, to become extraordinary, and to be exceptional difference makers in their own lives, in their communities, and in the world.”

Today I encourage you to examine your current clients and take a deeper dive into identifying your own niche. Start by asking yourself, “How did I find these clients?” and, “What drew them to me?”

What does living your exceptional life look like to you?

Are you flexible with who you work with or do you only work with targeted clients?

Is making money or making a difference more important to you?

Do you have an identified niche already? Does it still fit your story?
