All of our LinkedIn feeds are crazy right now!? At least two other companies that I admire have posted today? that they have made the difficult decision to lay off a portion of their workforce.? As a result, there are a lot of amazing people who are currently looking for work.? And there are job opportunities out there, but the hiring managers are able to be extremely picky.? (As they should be!)
I have been thinking a lot about this recently, as several members of my own team and other teams I have worked with were affected by a round of layoffs a few months ago.? I have been working with friends, coworkers, and outside groups to help these people find their next position, with some success.? Everyone can agree that losing your job can be a stressful and overwhelming experience, but it’s important to remember that this could mean that there is an opportunity for you to do something that is even better for you.
In particular, If you are a recruiter who has recently been laid off, you are in a great position to find a new job using the method that is still (and will always be) the best - NETWORKING.? Because you are a recruiter, this means that you are in contact with several new people, in various situations, every day.? Utilize that network to learn about other roles and companies that you may not have previously considered.? Let this be an opportunity to reassess your career goals and what you actually WANT to do.
I don't know everything, but here are some tips for finding a new position as a recruiter.??
- Update your resume and LinkedIn profile. Before you start applying for jobs, make sure your resume and LinkedIn profile are up to date and highlight your skills and experience as a recruiter. Consider including any accomplishments you achieved in your previous role, such as increasing the number of hires or improving the quality of candidates.? Use DATA to supplement these points.
- Network with your connections. Reach out to your professional network and let them know you’re looking for a new position. This could include former colleagues, recruiters you’ve worked with in the past, and members of professional organizations. Don’t be shy about asking for help or recommendations – your connections may be able to point you towards open positions or even refer you directly to hiring managers.
- Use job search websites and job boards. There are plenty of websites and job boards specifically geared towards recruiters, such as LinkedIn Jobs, Indeed, and ZipRecruiter. These can be great places to find open positions and get your resume in front of hiring managers. Don’t forget to also check out company websites – many organizations post open positions on their own website before advertising elsewhere.? Also, don’t forget to set up JOB ALERTS so that you are immediately notified when a role is posted that fits your abilities.
- Consider temporary or contract work. If you’re having a hard time finding a permanent position, consider looking for temporary or contract work in the meantime. This can be a great way to stay active in the industry and gain valuable experience while you continue your job search.? You may also get the opportunity to learn something completely new.
- KEEP AN OPEN MIND.? Consider looking for opportunities at different types of organizations or consider job descriptions that might not be what you were literally looking for, but instead have a vibe or a career path that can expand your skillset while being interesting.? Also, be thoughtful when reviewing the title of a role - different titles mean different things to various companies, depending on things like size and scope of the role.
Some of these tips are obvious, but you can always use a reminder that this is what you do!? You are great at this!??
Finally, as always, I am around and more than willing to use my connections to help you explore your next opportunity.? Good luck!? I am rooting for you!
