Finding Your Inner Child

In the hustle and bustle of adult life, it's easy to lose touch with the playful, curious, and joyful aspects of our personalities. This disconnect can lead to a sense of emptiness and stress. Finding your inner child—a concept that refers to reconnecting with the childlike aspects of your personality—can be a transformative experience. It's about embracing the sense of wonder, creativity, and joy that often gets buried under the responsibilities and routines of adulthood.

The importance of finding your inner child cannot be overstated. As adults, we often prioritize productivity and practicality over playfulness and imagination. However, these childlike qualities are crucial for our mental and emotional well-being. Embracing your inner child can help reduce stress, boost creativity, and improve your overall outlook on life. It allows you to view the world with a fresh perspective, rekindling a sense of excitement and curiosity.

There are several ways to reconnect with your inner child. One effective method is to engage in activities that you enjoyed as a child, such as drawing, playing games, or spending time outdoors. Another approach is to practice mindfulness and allow yourself to experience the present moment fully, without the distractions of adult concerns. Additionally, surrounding yourself with people who encourage and support your playful side can help reinforce this connection.

Play: Engage in mind play -

  • Do a crossword puzzle or Sudoku
  • Learn 3 words of a new language
  • Memorize a joke
  • Close your eyes and concentrate only on your breath flowing in and out of your body
  • Study some trivia
  • Do a word game
  • Work on a jigsaw puzzle
  • Learn a new song
  • Play a board game

When you're in a "brain fog," a little play can stimulate your brain

Sing: Maybe you think you’re a terrible singer. Maybe you’re right. Sing anyway! Here’s why: Singing reduces tension and increases energy, all while making you just plain feel good. Singing in a group can be especially powerful thanks to feeling social and connected. It doesn’t matter if you choose to be in a choir or give a solo performance in the shower or your car. Belt it out! Lift up your voice (and sing).

Fun: Do you feel guilty if you take time to play? You could be working or taking care of tasks at home? Consider this: When you feel happy and more joyful, those around you benefit from your good mood. And that's worthwhile. Write down the answer to this question: If you take time for yourself to have fun, who else benefits? It might be your child, partner, coworker, friends, even the grocery store cashier. Who would appreciate a version of you that’s more playful, calm and relaxed? Make yourself happy and then make others happy too. Give yourself permission to have fun.

The benefits of finding your inner child are profound and far-reaching. On a personal level, it can lead to increased happiness, reduced anxiety, and a greater sense of fulfillment. Professionally, it can enhance creativity and problem-solving skills, making you more innovative and adaptable. Moreover, embracing your inner child can improve your relationships by fostering a sense of play and spontaneity, making interactions more enjoyable and meaningful.

In conclusion, finding your inner child is a journey worth undertaking. It’s about rediscovering the joy and wonder that make life truly vibrant. By prioritizing activities that bring you happiness, practicing mindfulness, and surrounding yourself with supportive individuals, you can reconnect with this essential part of yourself. The result is a more balanced, joyful, and fulfilling life, where the stresses of adulthood are tempered by the pure, unbridled joy of childhood. So, take a moment, let go of your inhibitions, and invite your inner child to come out and play.
