Finding Your Glimmers
Small moments that spark joy

Finding Your Glimmers

? Ever heard of "glimmers"? They're about to become your new secret weapon for mental health and productivity!

The term glimmer, however, was introduced in 2018 in the book The Polyvagal Theory in Therapy:?Engaging the Rhythm of Regulation ?by licensed clinical social worker Deb Dana.

Glimmers are those small moments that evoke feelings of calm, connection, peace, and safety. They’re the little things that can instantly lift our spirits, even on tough days or when we’re feeling down.

To better understand glimmers, it’s helpful to compare them to triggers. While triggers are sensory reminders that can make us feel unsafe or bring back past trauma, glimmers serve the opposite purpose. Triggers can push your body into fight, flight, or freeze mode, whereas glimmers help soothe your nervous system and foster a sense of safety. Instead of worsening mental health or leading to addiction relapse, glimmers can enhance well-being and build resilience against setbacks.

Here are some examples of glimmers:

  • The barista who smiles while handing you your coffee;
  • Stopping to smell flowers in bloom;
  • Getting a hug just when you need it;
  • Hearing your favourite song unexpectedly;
  • Enjoying a compliment on your new haircut or outfit;
  • Feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin;
  • Noticing a beautiful sunset.

These small moments might seem insignificant, but they can have a big impact on your mental health and productivity. By paying attention to glimmers, you can:

  1. Reduce stress.
  2. Boost your mood.
  3. Increase mindfulness.
  4. Improve overall well-being.

It's almost as if this micro-moment—this glimmer—is the beginning of what can become a really big change. - Deb Dana, Polyvagal researcher and author who coined the term glimmer.

How to cultivate glimmers in your day:

  • Mindfulness Practice: Take a moment each day to pause and reflect on the small joys you encounter. This could be as simple as enjoying a favourite song or appreciating a moment of laughter.
  • Gratitude Journaling: Write down three glimmers from your day. This practice can help train your mind to look for positivity, even during challenging times.
  • Connect with Nature: Spend time outdoors, even if it’s just a short walk. Nature has a unique way of providing glimmers through its beauty and tranquillity.
  • Engage with Others: Foster relationships by sharing your glimmers. A simple conversation can lead to deeper connections and shared joy.

The best part? Glimmers are all around us, waiting to be noticed! ??
