Employee Fulfillment - The New Employee Engagement
I remember a conversation with Emily, an enthusiastic employee at TCC, a Verizon Authorized Retailer, during a visit to one of their locations. It was just over a year after we had launched our community impact initiatives. A recent survey had shown that more than 93% of TCC employees felt a renewed sense of fulfillment in their work because of these efforts. Emily shared with me, "When I started at TCC, I loved my job and was excited about building my career here. But getting involved in our community programs—it’s given me something more. It’s like finding my calling right here at work."
This shift in her perspective was profound. It wasn't just about the job anymore; it was about being part of something larger that added meaning to every sale, every customer interaction, and every day at the office.
More Than A Check
We spend roughly a third of our daily lives at work. This significant portion of our time is not just an opportunity but a responsibility for leaders to cultivate an environment that goes beyond the transactional aspects of work. It’s about creating a culture where giving back is woven into the fabric of an organization's identity. True fulfillment at work doesn't come from the paycheck or even the perks—it comes from a sense of purpose. It's not enough for companies to simply write checks to charities; engagement and fulfillment come when employees are actively involved in these efforts.
As I always say, "We should never do good to be seen, but we should always be seen doing good."
By visibly participating in charitable activities, we not only set a standard but also inspire and encourage our peers and competitors to elevate their practices.
Sharing A Collective Impact
Imagine the impact if every company committed to making a positive difference, not just annually, but in a way that grows and expands year over year. This isn't just about a one-time event; it's about building a legacy of continuous community engagement that becomes a core part of your business identity. It’s about inspiring each other to expand the good we can do collectively. As an example of how to grow our collective impact, the 2025 Community Impact Awards celebrate and recognize those efforts. They provide a platform for sharing your commitment to community service and inspiring others by example. Applying to be recognized sets a benchmark in corporate responsibility, inspires your peers, and grows your impact as part of this prestigious acknowledgment of community dedication.
A Unified Mission
What I've learned in over 10 years of leading this work is that employee fulfillment is evolving into something deeper than traditional engagement metrics.
It’s about meaningful, purpose-driven work that authentically reflects our values, saying, "This is what we care about." By integrating community impact into our daily work life, we not only enrich our own professional experiences but also contribute to a broader societal benefit. Let’s pledge to not just do good, but to do it together, creating a ripple effect of positivity and change that transcends our immediate surroundings.
