As 2023 draws to a close this December, it's a pivotal time for reflection. Ask yourself: Did your business achieve its goals this year, or were there even clear goals to begin with? It's common for business owners to feel like they're sitting in the passenger seat of their business, with a vague aim of 'improving.' But, 'improvement' without a clear definition is like driving without a destination. This article delves into why establishing a clear vision is essential for your company and how it can put you back into the driver's seat of your business journey.
So what is a vision? And why is it so important to have one for your business? Simply put, a vision is the path that your business is on, with an inevitable goal in the future. I like to think about it as a trip to--let's say Buffalo. Why are we going to Buffalo--who knows--but it's what I picked and I am writing the article. Eventually, our goal is to travel to Buffalo. It is our?destination. You can tell everyone on the team that it's where we are going. There is confidence in knowing that, sharing that, and having your entire team on board for the trip. For your business, this may mean "taking over the northeast," or it could be "being the biggest independent insurance agency in the state." Ultimately, it's about providing your team the direction to where?you?want the business to go.?
Now that you know you want to take your business to Buffalo, let's get your team involved and collaborate on the strategy. "Why not build the strategy myself?" you ask, well, if your team can contribute to the strategy, they'll be more likely to take ownership of it. This extends beyond your leadership team, too. Knowing that you can't have the entire company in the room with you when you strategize, gives your team ample opportunity to provide their ideas and opinions after seeing your vision. Let the team have their voices heard through form feedback or independent meetings. One example that I have seen work well is when each of the members of your leadership team takes each of their departments through a workshop, soliciting open-ended ideas and recommendations on a whiteboard. Leaders who don't seek opinions from their team are leaders who do it alone. Check your ego at the door.?
So what is a business strategy, anyway? To visualize it, let's stick with our trip to Buffalo: strategy is the directions you take to get there. Which method of transportation are you taking, which route, when are you leaving, when do you plan to arrive, etc.? A strategy is all about developing a series of goals and markers that will ensure you arrive at the destination that you have set (the vision). The key to developing a great strategy is breaking it down in a palatable manner. I like to work quarterly. Let's work backward from our year-end goal of getting to Buffalo. For us to get there, we need to break our trip into four equal legs. By the end of quarter one (March 31st), we will need to be in at least Greensboro, North Carolina. This is a clear milestone that will ensure we complete our overall annual business objective.?
Staying on course towards our business objectives requires the implementation of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and their regular review. These metrics act as our navigational beacons, ensuring focus, control, and awareness of our team's performance. In collaboration with your leadership team, select KPIs that best reflect progress towards your goals. For example, metrics like customer satisfaction, revenue growth, and operational efficiency can serve as our guideposts. Regularly sharing these KPIs with the team keeps everyone informed and engaged, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collective success.

Every journey, including the business one, is filled with unpredictability. Anticipating common roadblocks like seasonality is one thing, but it's the unforeseen challenges - economic shifts, competitive surprises, and industry changes - that truly test our nimbleness and adaptability. The key is flexibility, a supportive mindset, and a readiness to pivot when necessary. Quick problem-solving, evaluating options, and collective decision-making are vital. In these moments, a team aligned with the company's vision and strategy becomes your greatest asset, ready to support and navigate through any challenge.
Highlighting the importance of team support, it's crucial to have an engaged and motivated team, particularly when facing challenges. Celebrate milestones and acknowledge team achievements along the way. Recognizing both small and large contributions is vital, fostering a sense of ownership and unity. Consistency and fairness in recognition keep everyone informed and motivated. By doing so, you not only commend their efforts but also keep them aligned with the journey's progress, ensuring everyone knows how close you are to reaching those business goals.
As we approach the end of the first quarter, we find ourselves not just reaching but surpassing Greensboro — a clear sign we're ahead of schedule on our journey to Buffalo, symbolizing our business goals. It's a moment to celebrate with the team and share the collective excitement. Now, it's time to plan the next phase. The key lies in continuing the process: engaging with the team, seeking feedback, refining our strategy, and learning from each step. This approach, though metaphorically tied to Buffalo, encapsulates the essence of building and implementing a vision and strategy for your business. With the next quarter ahead, it's the perfect time to set this plan into action with your team.
As we draw near the end of this year and look towards the horizon of the next, remember that the journey to Buffalo, while metaphorical, mirrors the journey of your business. It's about setting a direction, rallying your team, and adapting to the road ahead. Your business's true north isn't just a distant dream; it's a path paved by clear vision and strategic steps. If you're contemplating the next phase of your business journey and seeking a guiding hand, I'm here, ready to help navigate.
