Finding Your Better Way

Finding Your Better Way

Hey there!

Scott here, and today we're going deep on something that's been rocking my world lately - getting crystal clear on the WHY, HOW, and WHAT of our lives and work.

You've probably heard of Simon Sinek's "Start With Why." It's a game-changer, but here's what nobody tells you: Sometimes what you think is your "why" is actually your "how" or "what."

Let me break down a personal revelation...

I recently did this exercise where I had to rank different purpose statements. Going in, I was certain my core "why" was "to contribute to a greater cause, to add value." I mean, that's what Corvus is all about, right? Empowering 10,000 family-oriented men by 2027?

Wrong.

Turns out, that's my "how." My true "why"? It's "to find a better way of doing things."

Mind. Blown.

I have to give a huge shout-out to Dr. Gary Sanchez, known as "Dr. WHY," for this revelation. While Simon Sinek got us all thinking about our "why," Gary cracked the code by identifying that there are only nine fundamental WHYs, and that understanding your complete WHY.os (WHY Operating System) means knowing not just your WHY, but your HOW and WHAT too.

The Nine WHYs are:

  1. To contribute to a greater cause, add value
  2. To create relationships based on trust
  3. To make sense out of complex things
  4. To find a better way of doing things
  5. To do things the right way
  6. To challenge the status quo with new thinking
  7. To seek mastery and understanding
  8. To seek clarity
  9. To simplify

Here's where it gets interesting...

Everyone has all nine within them, but they show up differently:

  • Your dominant WHY drives everything you do
  • Your second strongest is your HOW - the way you deliver on your why
  • Your third strongest is your WHAT - how it manifests in the world

In my case... WHY: To find a better way of doing things (This explains my constant drive to improve systems and approaches)

HOW: To contribute to a greater cause (This is the method - using better ways to help others)

WHAT: To make sense of complex things (This is how it shows up - breaking down complex life challenges into manageable frameworks)

This pattern shows up everywhere in my life:

  • Watching my dad miss my childhood drove me to find a better way to balance success and family
  • Corporate burnout pushed me to find a better way to achieve without sacrificing health
  • Even my martial arts business "failure" taught me to find a better way to align passion with purpose

Your Turn:

Head over to WHYinstitute.com and take the 8-minute assessment. It's a game-changer for understanding not just what drives you, but how you can best deliver on that drive.

Then ask yourself:

  1. Does my WHY show up consistently in my life?
  2. Am I using my natural HOW to deliver on my WHY?
  3. Does my WHAT align with both?

The Magic:

When these three align, you don't just know your purpose - you know how to live it authentically. Decisions become clearer. Impact becomes natural. Success becomes inevitable.

Your Move This Week:

  1. Discover your WHY.os
  2. Look for patterns in your life where your WHY shows up
  3. Start aligning your actions with your complete operating system

Real talk: This isn't just another personality test. It's about finding your authentic way of showing up in the world - and then doing it consistently.

What's your WHY.os? Hit reply and let me know how this lands for you. Let's build this community of men who know who they are and how they can best serve.

Keep soaring,

Scott

P.S. Remember what Dr. Sanchez says - when you talk about what you do, you blend in with everyone else. When you talk about why you do it, you stand out. Let's stand out together.

It’s easy to mistake the "how" or "what" for the deeper "why." But once we connect with our true purpose, everything else falls into place! Thanks for sharing Scott!

Love this post! I thought my WHY was just to eat tacos, but now I realize it's actually my HOW to enjoy life and my WHAT to satisfy my taste buds. Thanks for the reminder to dig deeper into my WHY.os!
