Struggling with Work-Life Balance? Try This Simple Trick
Finding work-life balance can feel like an impossible juggling act. Between a demanding job, family commitments, and personal goals, it’s easy to feel like you’re being pulled in 100 different directions.
But what if I told you there’s a simple scheduling strategy that could make all the difference? It’s called time blocking with boundaries, and it’s been a game-changer for my clients—and for me. Let’s dive in and see how it works.
Time Blocking Isn’t New, but Adding Boundaries Changes Everything
You’ve probably heard of time blocking—dedicating specific chunks of your day to certain tasks. But here’s the catch: most people forget about boundaries. Without them, work spills over into personal time, and suddenly, there’s no separation between the two.
A study by the American Psychological Association found that people who create clear boundaries between work and home experience lower stress and greater well-being. One of my clients, let’s call him Jake, used to check emails during dinner and finish reports late at night. He felt guilty whenever he took time off.
We set a strict boundary around his workday. If his workday ended at 5:00 PM, then at 5:01, his laptop was closed, and his phone was on silent. It felt uncomfortable at first, but within weeks, Jake was more present with his family and significantly less stressed.
Time blocking without boundaries is like building a house without walls—everything blends together. The power lies in drawing those lines and sticking to them.
Schedule Your Priorities—Don’t Let Your Schedule Prioritize You
Another key strategy is to schedule your priorities first. Don’t let your calendar dictate what’s important—you decide. Research by productivity expert Laura Vanderkam shows that people who schedule meaningful activities, like family time, exercise, or hobbies, are more satisfied with their lives.
For me, I block out time every week for my family, date nights with my wife, workouts, and personal development. Then, I plan my work around those blocks. It’s not about squeezing life into your schedule—it’s about designing your schedule around your life.
When you start with what matters most, everything else tends to fall into place. You’re not just managing time—you’re managing your energy and attention.

Use Ramp Down Time to Transition
Here’s a bonus tip: incorporate ramp down time to transition smoothly between work and personal life. Ramp down time is a buffer that helps you mentally shift gears and leave work behind.
Studies published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology found that people who create rituals to wind down from work experience better mental health and are more engaged at home.
My personal ramp down routine includes a 30-minute walk, listening to a podcast, or a quick workout. One of my clients spends 20 minutes reading a book after work and found that it made him less irritable and more relaxed at home. Find what works for you—it could be deep breathing, silence, or any activity that helps you reset your mindset.
Let’s Make Work-Life Balance Happen
To recap:
Work-life balance isn’t about doing everything; it’s about doing the right things at the right time. Give these strategies a try and notice the difference.
If this resonates with you, share it with someone who’s feeling overwhelmed, and let me know in the comments what you’re going to schedule differently this week.
