Finding and using your voice in business
Here’s the deal...
Your clients and those you are entrusted to guide and serve want to SEE YOU.
They want to FEEL YOU.
They want to KNOW YOU.
They want to HEAR YOU.
They want to TRUST YOU.
They long to HAVE FAITH IN YOU.
But none of that can happen if you aren’t putting your truth or voice out in the world.
Now when I say ‘voice’ I’m not talking about the literal voice.?
No. It’s more the metaphor of your position, your brand, your stand, your message as well as your quirks and personality. It’s the thing that people can grab on to and feel like they GET YOU.
These are the steps to getting your voice in the marketplace so you can make connections with the most amazing folks ever.
1. Know what you want to say – Super important here. Because if you are bland and try to fit in or sound like everyone else your results will reflect that. You want to have your own little tribe of folks who LOVE your voice. It’s kind of like those dog whistles. They are imperceptible to human ears, but dog’s come running! You want that for your people. They will hear you and their ears will perk up. So think about that right now. What is in your heart to share? What would you like to stand on a mountaintop and shout to the world? Once you find that, all your messaging revolves around that one thing. (Mine is this... "You can make money doing what you love in a business that serves your life while being really authentically self expressed." Feel free to share with me what yours is!)
2. Be willing to take risks to speak your truth – this voice stuff isn’t for the faint of heart. And many women have been socialized not to tell the truth or not to jump out and make waves. Loads of years of cultural conditioning going on here that serves to suppress your deep desire to be heard in the world. This is why karaoke has been a huge growth journey for me. I used to go and sing the same 5 songs. I was good. They were easy, and it worked. But then I saw the opportunity to expand. Using the vehicle of singing showed me how I was ‘being’ with trying new things. One time I sang Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” and it kinda bombed. Way out of my range, but what the heck. It was fun. So using this approach, what can you do in your business that would allow you to be a little more revealing about sharing your truth? Maybe it’s a blog post that outs something you believe. Maybe a video manifesto where you get real about what’s driving you nuts about your industry. The goal here is to be on that edge where you are a bit uncomfortable. That’s where growth lies.
3. Understand that there are folks who will love you... and folks who won’t – Yup. And for any people pleasers reading this, the whole concept is a tough one! But here’s the deal. Leaders lead. And if you are in business and have a platform (as in people following you) you MUST be strong enough to be in the front, pushing for change and challenging the status quo. This is where mindset and old patterns will want you to play small and be safe. But change only happens when courageous folks are out there pushing the edges, so if you get ‘haters’ no worries! It just means that you are doing it right.
4. Be comfortable being uncomfortable – Yeah, seems to be a theme doesn’t it. GROWTH IS MESSY! The path is always winding and there are breakdowns before the breakthroughs. That means that if you want a successful business and life you will be taken to your edges. You will face the crap in you that you thought was already healed. You will be asked to own your value and proclaim your worth when you may not quite believe it yourself. The trick here? It’s in having the right kind of support. Find a mentor or a mastermind group that will pull you forward and love you right where you are.?
5. Celebrate – I’m a bit wired to be always looking at the next growth opportunity. Because of this, it's easy to miss what’s working when in constant quest for expansion. So let’s do this... how about we end the day by journaling or reflecting on all the places where we took risks, expressed our voices, managed the uncomfortable feelings, and allowed the work we are to do here to express itself just a bit more. Make it a practice to acknowledge and focus on your success in this area and you’ll find it getting easier and easier. Then head on over to a karaoke club and sing your heart out!
Much love! And know I’m here to support you in being the most powerful version of yourself ever. :-)
