Finding and Using Your Unique Voice

Finding and Using Your Unique Voice

Posting engaging, valuable, insightful content is one of the best ways to build a network, attract opportunities and establish yourself on LinkedIn. And how you choose to post, and what you choose to post will be what sets you apart.

The key to standing out on the platform is the ability to develop a unique voice so you can distinguish yourself in the professional sphere. Having a distinct perspective is one way to increase your visibility, which helps to develop new and stronger connections, which in turn leads to those ever-exciting moments of opportunity.

So this month we’re putting a spotlight on standing out in a crowd. We’ve got some practical ways to help you hone that unique perspective, as well as some thought starters to set you on your way.

As always, we welcome your thoughts and feedback—let us know how we can support you in future editions by commenting below! ??

Finding Your Voice Within Your Niche

There’s only one youthat’s where to start.

Only you’ve had your life experiences, been through your career journey, developed your skills, formulated your opinions. This is the well to draw from when thinking about your unique outlook, and how you express it on LinkedIn. Here’s how you can start that process:

?? Reflect: Think back on your own career history - try and pinpoint those moments where your expertise aligned with your passions - or where it didn’t, and what that meant for you personally.

? List: When thinking of topics to post about, jot down a list of your skills and a list of your interests, check out where they intersect and see if one brings insight to the other.

?? Be introspective: Try and pinpoint what sets your viewpoint apart from others’ within your field. Some ways to do this might be thinking about what makes you energized, what makes you mad or what motivates you.

?? Be proactive: Don’t just think your thoughts, write them down! Whether it’s brainstorming to get ideas out of your head so you can sort the good from the bad, or journalling to enable reflection, it’s likely something you think or feel will be a good starting point for your content.

Each of these is a route into turning your own experiences and professional insight into content your audiences will find interesting, relatable and, crucially, valuable.

This article deeply resonates with what I discuss in my book Unique Stories. I believe that before developing a "unique voice," it's crucial for professionals to truly know themselves, understanding what they want to position, how they want to be seen and remembered. This process involves having clarity of direction and identifying one's own differentiators, but most importantly, being proud of them. It's like putting our experiences, failures, victories, and learnings into a blender to create something truly unique. This blend is what sets us apart in the market and allows us to stand out with authenticity and purpose.

As a content creator and digital business professional ... I have no shame in saying after accepting my recent role I've lost touch with my audience. I don't know what to write, or who to write for lol. Time to set new LinkedIn goals ????
