Productivity would mean nothing if the activities associated were not helpful to bring the right outcomes, the outcomes that align to the bigger picture that is vision, mission & value. It is a big-picture focus and having a deep understanding of the vision, mission & value that defined the productivity.
You might be the person who able to accomplish many things in a speedy ways in less amount of time, but again, it only means that you were doing many things toward wrong results.
From my humble previous work experiences, I learnt to think first before start to bog myself in grease and dirt to get things done. Think about the vision, mission & value, the ultimate aim that you would like to achieve. Formulate the action plans that support your goal and work out the method on how to do it in the efficient & effective way. It results in increased productivity. That I called the real juice of productivity. This is a fundamental concept of productivity that oneself has to belief and practice.
The first step toward improvement productivity must start from laying the right foundation means getting the vision, mission, value (goal) right and crystal clear to all the people who work for you as a leader.
The best productivity can produce in this world is when all the team members are cohesive, able to channel all their energy getting the things done. Team work with the same direction produce the greatest productivity results.
Simple analogy, just imagine that if the goal is to change the four flat tyre of the car.
First method: Engage the fastest hand & skilful mechanic to do it alone. Mm.. Say he can change one tyre in 2 minutes, simple mathematic four tyres he needs 8 minutes to get all the flat tyres changed in sequential one by one.
Second method: Engage 4 mechanics with say each of them not that skilful compared to the first method but able to change a tyre in 4 minutes. All four mechanics do it at once as a team; four tyres get changed in 4 minutes simultaneously.
It is very obvious. The productivity of the second method produces higher productivity compared to the 1st method.
Now, the thought-provoking questions a leader should ask are,
-
How can a leader lead a team of 4 mechanics to align to a same ultimate goal & get the job done effectively? (this question is focus on “effectiveness”)
-
How can a leader increase the team skills-set improve from 4 minutes a tyre to 2 minutes a tyre? (this question is focus on “efficiency”)
Any improvement on the team will result in greater results.
The subsequent steps toward improving productivity are:
(Click on below sentence to read the separate article in detail to find out what I mean)
- Build a productive team via continuous training & skills upgrading
- Implement command and control in execution
- Cultivate preventive mindset
When you are NOT lazy and procrastinate, you can create more QUALITY TIME in your work as well as your personal life. It is relatively straightforward. (#ProductivityHacks)

9 年Haha. You are right! In fact, it is a complicated model trying to disguise in simple analogy to squeeze our thought process. The underlying works are enormous yet challenging and fulfilling.

9 年Darrell, you gave us a simple analogy which doesn't consider complicated factors. So we are talking about simple models or complex agent based models?

9 年A systemic productivity approach to compete in quality, time and cost through workflow and individual function redesign is a great concept in total productivity management . Nevertheless, the individual productivity is still depending on the basic fundamental factors I.e. motivation, execution discipline, skills & etc who are the small part that form the entire reliable system.

9 年Well, we can create a grotesque. The most productive team is a system with unlimited number of members. Each member has a minimum possible function. So the system output is maximized. But only the output because in that case the productivity of each member is minimized.
