Self-Motivation to Drive Productivity in Less Enjoyable Tasks

Like any other industry, we at EPC industry in Oil & Gas, Carbon Capture & Renewables, often find ourselves juggling multiple tasks—some engaging, others monotonous. The key to maintaining motivation is identifying fulfilling aspects (which we enjoy) within the overall scope of work and using that intrinsic drive (work satisfaction) to power through less enjoyable responsibilities.

The Power of Self-Motivation

Self-motivation is an essential skill, especially in high-pressure industries like engineering, project management, and oil & gas, where tasks range from strategic planning to meticulous documentation. Instead of waiting for external validation or excitement, one can find personal fulfillment in aspects of the job that align with their strengths and interests.

Motivation isn’t just about doing what we love—it’s about making what we must do more engaging. By strategically aligning fulfilling tasks with necessary ones, professionals can sustain enthusiasm, improve productivity, and inspire those around them

Scenario Example: The Project Engineer Balancing Passion and Routine

Consider a project engineer working on an offshore installation project. Their primary role involves overseeing construction activities, which they enjoy due to problem-solving and fieldwork. However, a significant part of the job includes preparing compliance reports—something they find tedious.

Instead of viewing reporting as a burden, the engineer can reframe the task:

  1. Finding Purpose: Understanding that accurate reports help streamline approvals and avoid costly delays.
  2. Integrating Passion: Using real-world insights from the field to make reports more insightful, instead of just treating them as a formality.
  3. Leveraging Momentum: Scheduling reporting tasks immediately after engaging fieldwork sessions when motivation is high, making the transition smoother.

Turning Enjoyment into a Productivity Multiplier

When professionals maximize motivation from enjoyable tasks, they can strategically channel that energy into tackling less desirable ones. Here are some practical strategies:

  1. Batch Similar Tasks: Combine an engaging task with a necessary but dull one, creating a balance that prevents burnout.
  2. Set Micro-Goals: Break large tasks into smaller, rewarding milestones to maintain engagement.
  3. Find Autonomy: Where possible, bring creativity and process improvements into mundane tasks to make them more fulfilling.

Hi Atanu Das.?I agree that some tasks can be tedious and not enjoyable. If I reframe the task and remind myself that it adds value, has a purpose, and builds towards a greater goal - then however small that task may appear, it gives me motivation to get it done!
