Finding the Right Words!

Finding The Right Words....

I work for a very large and very diverse consulting company that’s a global leader in so many areas, which includes inclusion & diversity (I&D) but even with all of I&D training and experiences I still struggle to have a deep conversation with anyone about racism and the events over the past few weeks, months and years. It’s especially hard to talk to my little ones about what’s happening right now but thank god my wife broke the ice with them and we now both continue to speak to them about it on an almost a daily basis.

Work wise, I have a large and very diverse project team and for some reason it’s even harder to speak about the racism with them. I shared my struggles to speak in depth about this on a leadership call last night (which got me all teared up) and this afternoon one of my colleagues shared this note below which really helped me. I wanted to share this with you because this applies to not only work but to everyday life and I hope it will help you.

Thank you for reading and for keeping the conversation going!

Thank you @casywells

The tragic events of the past few weeks had left me with no words. No words that could even remotely describe the frustration, anger, and sorrow in my heart.  No words that could express my desire to turn back time and somehow stop the injustice experienced by the African American/Black community – most recently George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Christian Cooper, and Ahmaud Arbery. No words that could possibly heal the pain being felt by our colleagues, friends and families. No words because I didn’t want to say the wrong thing and create more pain, suffering, and frustration. I had no words, but also recognize that silence does not move us forward.

Today, I am breaking the silence and encouraging us all to find our words and lift our voice.  We must find and use our words to talk with (not at) each other.  We must find and use our words to share our feelings and express our honest emotions.  We must find and use our words to offer comfort and support.   But words alone do not heal. Words alone do not stop racism and bias. Words alone will not correct the injustices of the past.  We must also find and use our words to explore actions we can take – big and small – to make a difference.  We must find and use our words to work toward solutions.

I know it’s difficult to sometimes find the “right” words to get a conversation started.  Below are resources that you might find helpful and give you some ideas about how to engage with each other and with your families and communities in a caring, compassionate way.

We have a responsibility and the ability to work together to influence the future in a more positive way.  Please know that I am here for you - here to listen and here as your partner in action.
