Finding the RIGHT Therapist/Counselor/Coach

Finding the RIGHT Therapist/Counselor/Coach

Over the past two weeks, I've come to realize the immense significance of finding the right therapist or coach. This article is a blend of my insights and the experiences of my clients.

Emotional Wellbeing is just as important as breathing is.

In recent times, I've had the privilege of meeting over ten clients who carried with them what I call "therapist baggage." But what does that mean?

These clients had sought help from various therapists, yet they couldn't connect with any of them. They felt that the sessions were too restrictive or didn't align with their values. Some even questioned if therapy was the right path for them. For instance, one of my clients expressed feeling constrained during sessions, and when they suggested an alternative approach, the therapist didn't agree. Another therapist conveyed, "Your trauma is too much, I don't think I can deal with it."

Before I explain why understand

There is No Standard Normal. Normal is subjective. There are 7 billion versions of normal on this planet.

But why does this happen?

  1. Human beings are inherently different. Not every therapist or coach is a perfect fit for everyone. Recognize that you may resonate with some professionals but not with others.
  2. It's also essential to remember that therapists and coaches are human too. They may have their triggers and limitations. Open communication about these issues is the best way to address them.
  3. In my journey of seeking therapy, I had to switch therapists six times before finding the right one. It doesn't mean the other six were inadequate, but they weren't the best fit for me. Be open to change and strive to find the one who resonates with you.
  4. While credentials are essential to understanding a therapist's expertise, it's equally vital to feel comfortable and at ease with them.
  5. Consider your budget. If financial stress clouds your mind, finding the right therapist or coach can be more challenging.

How can you find a therapist/coach that works for you?

  1. Network and ask for referrals. Recommendations from friends who've experienced therapy can make the process easier.
  2. Take advantage of coaches' free or pay-as-you-like discovery calls. This initial interaction helps you gauge the compatibility of your energies.
  3. Check therapists' and coaches' online content on platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram to see if you resonate with their approach.
  4. Ask questions. (I know you've heard this a lot!) Here's a list of questions you can use as a starting point: What's your specialization? How long do you think my journey will take? What expectations do you have from your clients? Have you worked with cases similar to mine? What's your most significant learning experience? How will our sessions be structured? How frequently should we meet?
  5. Recognize your preference for working with someone strict or friendly, someone who provides direct feedback or a more gentle approach.
  6. Be open. Express your needs and be willing to find someone else if you don't feel a connection with your therapist or coach.
  7. Credibility matters. Friends might not be qualified to be your therapist or coach, as professionals undergo extensive training in understanding human behaviour.
  8. Consider the mode of therapy. Some people prefer chat or phone sessions, while others feel more comfortable with video or in-person sessions.

Remember that the first session won't transform your life but will help you understand your needs and goals. It's around the tenth or twentieth session that you'll start noticing significant changes, so be patient.

While this journey might seem lonely, it doesn't have to be. I know there are a lot of people who still don't believe in the idea of "getting help" but it won't make you any less. All it will do is find you the courage and path to be better.

Always know no matter at what stage you are in your life, you still deserve the best. So take that first step and get help.

I read the article. These were some good question to ask before having a coach . All these questions which you asked in second part of your essay "how much time it will take for me" or so many questions can be asked by so many coaches
